Forget tampons and condoms, pregnancy tests are the new vending machine hot commodity!

Say you’re out for a night of fun and drinks with some friends.

You hit up the bar and enjoy a before-dinner aperitif, feeling good and ready to let loose and have a little fun.

But before you get down to that
business of fun, there’s just one thing you need to care of.

But before you get down to that business of fun, there's just one thing you need to take care of. So you duck into the restroom for a quick trip…to the pregnancy test vending machine.

So you duck into the restroom for a quick trip…

To the pregnancy test vending machine.

Nope, I’m not kidding. A non-profit organization called Healthy Brains for Children, based out of Minneapolis, MN is on a mission to make sure that “women think before they drink.”

According to their website, the group hopes to target the high percentage of women with surprise pregnancies who may not realize they are pregnant before indulging in a drink.

Their website states, “Unexpected pregnancies are at a high risk for prenatal exposure to alcohol that can cause lifelong damage to the fetus. This early development damage can have catastrophic consequences, such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, behaviors now related to Autism Spectrum Disorder, lifelong learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, depression, and is linked to over 60 illnesses.

There is no safe amount of alcohol. Research shows even small amounts of
alcohol during the pregnancy has a detrimental impact on reading and math abilities when the child is school aged. The first trimester of a pregnancy is particularly susceptible to damage from alcohol. Binge drinking is very damaging to the developing fetus. Binge drinking and unexpected pregnancies go hand in hand.”

By targeting with “unintended pregnancies,” the group hopes to place pregnancy test dispensers in female bathrooms in at all available bars, restaurants, fitness centers, and shopping centers.

In light of the most recent study that implies that pregnant women may actually be able to drink more than previously thought, the work of Healthy Brains for Children may be more important than ever.

Healthy Brains for Children reports that it installed its first pregnancy test dispenser last July in Mankato, MN and that the dispensers are extremely convenient because all they require is the “swipe of a credit card” and quick and painless removal of a pregnancy test.

Most recently, a pub near a Canadian college campus in Thunder Bay, Ontario plans to install the group’s pregnancy test dispenser.

What do you think? Are the pregnancy test dispensers a good idea?

I think it is a great idea. Before I knew I was pregnant I drank a few times. Luckily my son was born healthy and has had no problems. If there would have been something like this before I knew I definitely would not have been drinking. We need to raise awareness about unexpected pregnancy’s and Fetal Alcohol syndrome!
