Is Running Safe During Pregnancy?

pregnant exercise

While I was pregnant with my second daughter, a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-family member (got that?) happened to be due with her second child around the same time that I was.

And while I was rapidly expanding by the minute with my pregnancy, she was doing something entirely different—

Training for a 10K race.

I was dumbfounded. Granted, she was an incredibly fit and athletic person to begin with, but running? During pregnancy? How is that even possible? And is it safe?

Well, according to the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology running during your pregnancy is generally safe, providing that you were a runner before you became pregnant. Their official policy goes on to explain that runners who wish to continue running during their pregnancies “may have to modify their routine.”

And if by “modify” they mean, plop down on the couch with some ice cream, then I am all in.

In all seriousness, exercising during pregnancy is extremely important and will provide not only the physical benefits of keeping you active and fit, and preparing your body for labor, but it will provide extremely important mental benefits as well. If you are an active person before your pregnancy, there is no reason to alter your exercise routine drastically, although you may find you need to accommodate the exercise as your body changes and your belly grows.

But don’t lace up your shoes just yet.

Women who are at high-risk, have any medical complications, and especially women with any history of preterm labor or extremely premature babies, should seek advice from their care provider before embarking on a exercise routine. And women who haven’t been particularly active before their pregnancies should also be sure to talk to their care providers before getting started.

If, after all that, you are a woman who is able to run throughout your pregnancy, or even train for 10K races, I applaud you.

And I will join you. At the finish line.
