This Is Why Your Postpartum Body Is Beautiful. (No, Seriously!)

It's time for us to put an end to the madness by simply telling the truth about your postpartum body:

You really are beautiful. 

And I don't mean that in a cliched, soothing sense, like a mom would hush her child when he's being unreasonable. 

I mean that in the very guts of the words, in the most real and authentic way possible, because you really are truly beautiful.

You're beautiful when you plod across the floor in the middle of the night to scoop up that baby whose entire world is literally you right now.

You're beautiful when you fix the bottle or latch the baby, meeting all of his needs perfectly right now.

You're beautiful when your stomach, still soft with the remnants of the life it has carried, won't quite fit into the jeans you were hoping to squeeze into because you know what? Motherhood has changed you from the innermost part of your soul and it's OK if your body has changed too. 

You're beautiful when you look around and wonder if this is normal, if you will ever feel normal again. From the other side, I can tell you that it is and you will.

You will find your new normal and you will look back at pictures of yourself from this time, so raw and new, and you will not see greasy hair or a soft stomach or rolls sticking out of your pants. 

You will see eyes filled with love and wonder at what you have created, the new person you have become.

You will see that special brand of exhaustion that only new parents can live through, the one that is somehow manageable, the one that shows the sacrifice of love written in the lines on your face. 

You will see your baby, so tiny and small and perfect in your arms, untoned as they may be. 

And you will realize that you never should have worried, that the weight will come off in time, that there will be endless time later, when your arms and life and days aren't filled with the demands of a baby and a toddler, to exercise, to get your body “back.”

And you will wonder, quite honestly, if you really want it back.

Because you have changed. And looking at the next new mama in the grocery store, the one who is self-consciously shielding her stomach with her baby carrier, the one who looks exhausted and is shrinking into the canned goods, hoping no one can smell the spit-up on her arm, and you will realize –

She is absolutely beautiful.
