Piercing Debate for Gisele Bundchen

After posting a seemingly sweet picture of her and her daughter while on holiday in Costa Rica, model Gisele Bundchen might have been surprised by the reaction of her followers. Instead of hundreds of comments about how cute her daughter Vivian is, the comments turned into criticisms. Both her Instagram and blog comments filled with  those bashing her for piercing her daughter’s ears.

Those angry with Gisele think that piercing a child’s ears is cruel and unfair for a child who has no say in what you do to her body. Some are bashing her for the choice mainly because she has been vocal about other’s parenting choices in the past – including calling natural childbirth not painful and stating that breastfeeding should be mandatory.

While supporters of Gisele point to her Brazilian culture — where the piercing of a child’s ears is common– Gisele has not responded to the backlash.

I do not understand the obsession other parents have about the seemingly harmless choices of another parent.

I pierced my daughter’s ears when she was 15 months old. Not only did her tears last for maybe a second for each ear, but also she absolutely loves her pierced ears. With her personality, if we would have waited she would never have made it past the first ear. She does not handle pain well at all as she has gotten older and I have absolutely no regrets about having her ears pierced when I did.

Now while I could claim a cultural reason for piercing my daughter’s ears — she is part Brazilian — that was not a factor in the decision at all. I pierced her ears because I wanted to and because I think baby girls look cute with pierced ears. I have never received any backlash about the decision; but even if I did, I would not care.

In the end, whether or not another person's child has pierced ears has absolutely no bearing on you or your life, and I think the backlash is rather ridiculous.

Did you pierce your child’s ears?  At what age?

my mother pierced my ears when I was a baby(3 months old) as well as all my sisters ears.. I would have done my daughter that early as well but by husband comes from a very proper family his mother still doesn’t have pierced ears… so I told my husband I would wait until our daughter asked… she asked at 5 years old!

Wow. It’s not the worse thing you can do. Circumcision hurts the child but piercing does not
