Head’s Up Moms, Pediatricians Recommend that You Hold the Juice!

Since 2001 the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that babies not be offered fruit juice until they are at least six months old. Just recently they came out with a new guideline that advises parents to hold the juice until your baby is at least a year old.

The American Academy of Pediatrics updated their guidelines after noting that kids consumption of juice grew significantly over the last decade but that many kids were still not meeting their recommended daily servings of whole fruit. Babies and toddlers often enjoy the sweet taste of juice. But it has significantly more sugar than other recommended beverages and does not positively impact kids health the way that consuming whole fruit does.

If you have a little one under one year old, hold the juice until they’re older. If your tot is older than one, consider offering juice sparingly, only a few times per week. Also, try cutting juice 50/50 with water when you do offer it. Instead of juice, try offering your baby whole fruit which has significantly greater impacts on health.

Many babies enjoy softened apples, pears, or bananas as first fruits. Strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries can also be added to oatmeal or enjoyed with other whole grains for a healthy and enjoyable meal. There’s plenty of time for juice in the future. For now, encourage your baby's health by offering whole fruit instead.
