4 Out-of-the-Box Family Vacation Ideas

For some families, summer is all about vacation. Whether it’s trips to the beach, escapes to the mountains, or plane rides to another country, travel is a big part of their summer plans. For other families though, summer travel is just too expensive to think about. If your summer travel budget is smaller than you’d like, but you still want to have fun and make memories with your family, consider thinking out-of-the-box when it comes to vacation. Check out these out-of-the-box vacation ideas this summer.

Try taking it outside

If your budget won’t allow for a pricey hotel but you still want to get out of town, consider camping as an alternative. While there are lots of rustic campgrounds to be found, there are also many campgrounds full of amenities like swimming pools, family activities, water sports, and dining halls. Yogi Bear’s Camp Jellystone has locations across the country that make for a fantastically fun family vacation.

Trade homes with a family in another city

If you want to cut out the cost of lodging completely, consider trading homes with another family in another part of the country. All you’ll need to do is match up your vacation days and you’ll both have somewhere free to stay while you’re exploring a new part of the state or country. Talk about some out-of-the-box fun! You could always do this by making arrangements with friends or family in other locations, but there are also services like Home Exchange that connect you with others interested in trading.

Vacation right at home

While you may have heard of taking a staycation, take your at-home relaxation a step further by cutting out your daily responsibilities while you’re on your staycation. Explore your city and all it has to offer and, while you’re at it, turn off your cell phone, put your out-of-office up on email, and aim for ease (like using paper plates and opting out of laundry for a few days) as you go about your days. Hit up a restaurant you've always wondered about during the less expensive lunch hours, catch up on the movie or series you always meant to watch, or play tourist at local attractions.

Visit friends or family

If you’ve got friends or family in an interesting city, you’ve got your next vacation destination. While it might be a little cramped when you come to visit you’ll have fun exploring somewhere new and getting to spend time relaxing and visiting with friends or family you haven't seen in a while.
