4 Online Platforms to Share Your Baby’s First Year with Family
Nearly six years ago, my life as I knew it changed when I became pregnant with my first child. At that time, my husband was in the military and we lived 500 miles away from family. I wanted to keep everyone updated with my pregnancy and then baby's first year, so I began a blog. Back then there weren't as many social media outlets to share photos or your thoughts with the world, as there are now. It seems like lately every time you turn around, there is always some new way of sharing your life with family, friends, and strangers. It's an exciting world of digital media we live in today, but it also can be a bit overwhelming. Here are some options that are just a few of the online platforms you can use to share your baby's first year of life with family.
1. Create a blog
There are several different blogging platforms to choose from. When I started blogging I began with Blogger, for its ease of use in terms of layouts and templates. Blogger was perfect for building an online “baby book” for family and friends. Later down the road I transferred my blog to a self-hosted blog on WordPress. Tumblr is another blogging platform that is mostly used for photos and short posts. 2. Shutterfly ThisLife
Shutterfly ThisLife is a new feature that is run through Shutterfly, where you can store and share all your videos and photos in one place. The great thing about ThisLife is that you import your videos and photos on to your desktop, iPhone, iPad, or Kindle. Additionally, you can share your media through Instagram, Flickr, Picasa, and Facebook. My son's soccer league set up a ThisLife account for the parents and coaches of each team in the league. It was a great way for us to share photos throughout the season.
With ThisLife, you could create an account for your baby and share it with friends and family. They could then import photos or videos of themselves to share with your baby.
Many people, including myself, use Flickr as a secondary back up storage for their photos and videos. Flickr also has a wonderful feature that most people are not aware of called Group Sharing. Anyone with a Flickr account can create a group that can be set to public, public by invitation only, or private. Members of the group can view and add to photos and videos in the group.
I love Instagram. It has been perfect for capturing Ryker's milestones, since it's quick, easy and at my fingertips in a moment's notice. Your Instagram profile can be set to private or public, so you can limit who sees your photos. Also, you can use a certain hashtag to document your baby's milestones, growth, and so much more. I know many moms who have documented their baby's first year of life, by taking at least one photo each day and using the same hashtag for it all year long. This is such a fun and easy way to document just how much your baby changes during the first year.
