New Kicks: Give Old Shoes New Life

There are actually cute shoes that now come in size huge.

We haven’t always been on the best of terms – shoes and I; because there was a time when I couldn’t find a pair of cute,  decently priced shoes that would fit these feet that I inherited from my Samoan roots (they’re absurdly long and wide – I pretty much have flippers). When I say a decent price, I mean a price that didn’t exceed $30.00 (Even that was pushing it. Remember my frugal dad? His frugality also applied to shoes.); so finding a pair of shoes in our price range, that didn’t look like they belonged to my diabetic grandfather, or WWE’s Umaga, was always an excruciating event.

It’s much better now – my shoe situation.  There are actually cute shoes that come in size huge now. Thanks, shoe gods.

I found these at a thrift store:

It was a rare and miraculous, $3.00 find.

I have plain shoes, so I was looking for something a bit more fancy – something with a little lace or sparkle so that I could wear them to a party. Just kidding, I hate going to parties; so what I mean is, if you’re going to some holiday events, and need some fancy shoes but don’t want to spend a lot on something new, you could always give an old pair a make-over.

Do you want to see what I did with mine?

Remember the shoes in their before state?

I gathered some supplies: my new-old shoes, an old lacy shirt, and some glue.

Then I channeled my inner craftiness, smeared the shoes with a thin layer of glue, and then placed the fabric over the gluey shoe, and waited for it to dry. I cut down the middle of the fabric, and then tucked and glued the excess inside of the shoe; and then trimmed off the outer excess with sharp scissors.

I ended up with this:

Lace not your thing? You could always cover your shoes in sequins, paint, other fabric, etc. The possibilities are endless.

How will you re-do your shoes?
