Mom is Surprised After Giving Birth Naturally to 15-pound, 7-ounce Newborn
A couple in Bristol, England, Jade and Ryan, got the surprise of their life recently when their son was born. Not only did their bundle of joy arrive six weeks early, but when he arrived, little George King was, well, not so little. He weighed a whopping 15 pounds and 7 ounces. At 34 weeks, that is almost twice the size of the average newborn. Can you imagine how much he would have weighed had he gone to term?
Talk about being surprised at the birth! When I was pregnant, the question was do we find out the sex of the baby or do we wait for a surprise at birth? With modern technology and science being what it is, doctors can tell a lot about a baby before it is ever born, but somehow, no one saw this coming.
Understandably, Jade had difficulty delivering the baby boy. Not until his head was delivered did the doctors, who were delivering him, realize how large the newborn was, and at that point, his shoulders became stuck. He was deprived of oxygen for five minutes and was only given a 10% chance of survival.
He stayed in the hospital for 4 1/2 weeks and is now 6 weeks old and home. He has only gained an ounce since being out, but really, he was already ahead of the game for sure. His parents say that he is doing well, and a recent MRI showed no major damage. They are hoping he will only have some slight delays in learning as a result of the oxygen deprivation.
Doctors are baffled as to why the baby was so large. Neither parent was extraordinarily large, both were quite average-sized newborns themselves.
For now, Jade is packing away all the newborn-sized clothing that she bought for her baby and is saving it for her next child. After the ordeal with giving birth to no-so-little George, she says that she is a bit put off on the idea for a while. I can't say I blame her.
I was induced with both of my daughters because doctors were afraid my babies were going to be large — too large for me to birth. My husband is 6’5” and was 24 inches long when he was born and weighed 10 pounds. I am only 5’7” and was a preemie who barely weighed 4 pounds when I was born. My girls weighed 7 pounds and 13 ounces and 8 pounds and 6 ounces. Quite frankly, my second daughter was almost a c-section because she was too large for me to birth. She got stuck. Luckily, we were able to get her out naturally, but it was not easy. Anything larger and I would have needed a c-section.
I have a lot of respect for Jade. Once the head came out and we realized how large he was, I would have passed out cold.
