Mindy Kaling Spills The Beans On Her Surprise Pregnancy
Raise you hand if you've heard the news that Mindy Kaling announced her surprise pregnancy. Yup, it's true and I love her even more for it.
If you're anything like me, you are eagerly awaiting the return of Mindy Kaling's original Hulu series, “The Mindy Project,” which is airing its final season starting September 12. And if you're not like me and obsessed with the show, you need to change that immediately and go watch it because the show is pure gold. It combines all of my favorite things: witty dialogue (think the fast-paced banter of “The Gilmore Girls”), pregnancy, and drama-free entertainment. While I love a good all-the-feels drama like “This Is Us,” I also have to admit that those shows are shows I have to prepare myself for. I'm talking wine, a box of tissues, the comfiest blanket around, total privacy because you know my husband will make fun of me for the inevitable sobbing that will take place.
“The Mindy Project,” on the other hand, is just good, clean fun. I love Kaling's character on the show because she is unabashedly confident in her job and equally unabashedly open about her love for food, which I relate to on a deep and spiritual level. I loved watching the show–which is written and produced by Kaling herself–tackle the hard parts about combining work and motherhood and what that means to modern-day women. The show didn't shy away from how downright hard that can be and how women are still struggling with guilt about wanting to work and be moms too.
And now, Kaling is going to get to experience everything her show talked about for herself. Rumors swirled for awhile that Kaling was expecting a surprise baby, but the actress went a long time before opening up publicly about her baby. And now, she's spilling the baby beans.
Kaling kept us all in suspense for a long time about her pregnancy, but she has an upcoming video interview with NBC (it airs Sunday, Sep 10!) where she is going public with all the details. In the preview for the piece, she talked about something that so many of us who are parents can relate to: how freaking scary the thought of becoming a parent is.
“It's so unknown to me,” she said. “I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I'm like, ‘OK, it's out of my hands,' which is kind of a fun feeling.”
I distinctly remember having this “holy crap” moment when I was first pregnant when I realized that I was locked in for the ride–there was no getting off, there was no changing my mind–it was just me and this growing bump to the delivery finish line and I had to accept that. It was so scary to realize that for once, you are not in charge, so I completely get where Kaling is coming from.
The 38-year-old actress talked about how supportive her own mother had been and how she hoped to give that same gift to her child.
“My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us, just loved us and really wanted us to be happy no matter what we did,” Kaling explains in the interview. “My career choice was not something that she was familiar with and she was just so supportive of that. And if I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I’d be so happy.”
