Is Meghan Markle Ready to Be a Mom? Let’s Look at the Evidence
Well, it's happened: Meghan Markle, the new Royal Family darling, has officially announced her pregnancy with Prince Harry, her husband of six months. Their baby, which you can only imagine will be the cutest thing ever to walk this earth in his or her Royal shoes, is due in the spring, making the couple's first wedding anniversary in May a very big reason to celebrate.
Her pregnancy, probably unsurprisingly, has already come under close scrutiny, with people accurately guessing she was pregnant before she officially announced it (um, the giant coat was a dead giveaway, Meghan, that may have been a rookie mistake on her part, considering her “bump” then was the size of most of us when we are sucking it in) and keeping close tabs on her plans for delivery.
Honestly, she had some big shoes to follow after Kate, but I'd venture to say they are both doing a fabulous job of being a wonderful example of how two different women with two different styles and two different way of doing things their own way can totally rock it. I have no doubts that Meghan will be just as awe-inspiring as Kate was post-delivery, or as equally as graceful, no matter how rough the pregnancy is for her. But what about motherhood itself? Meghan has had a lot of changes to her life in the past year, from joining one of the most famous families in the entire world, becoming a wife to a Prince, and now, prepping to become a mom.
So, is she actually ready for what lies ahead? Let's take a look at what we know so far.
She's always wanted to be a mom
As recently as three years ago, Meghan was gracing magazine covers, showing off her flexibility, and chatting about her future: “Other bucket-list items: I want to travel more and I can’t wait to start a family, but in due time,” she told Best Health Magazine. Clearly, this pregnancy was a much-desired one! And at 37, it's safe to say Meghan feels her “due time” has definitely come.
She's rocking a “mom” haircut
As of this morning, news outlets were reporting that Meghan Markle had debuted a new “pregnancy” haircut. The haircut features shorter layers around her face, reportedly to subtly soften her features as they change throughout the pregnancy. (Read: disguise any pregnancy swelling in her face, let's just be blunt about it and I only say that as a woman who will never look 1/4 as good as Meghan Markle even on my very best day, let alone at nine months pregnant.)
It's been surmised that the cut was as a result of changes to the physical make-up of her hair, as hormones can change how a woman's hair grows, along with texture and thickness. Either way, however, those of us who are already moms know that with changing your whole identity as a mother, you often feel compelled to change your outward appearance too, so many of us cut or change our hair during pregnancy. It's definitely a sign that Meghan is moving into motherhood just like the rest of us!
She may be willing to give up her citizenship for her baby
They say moms make the ultimate sacrifices for their kids, right? Well, Markle is no exception. And although it's arguable how much of a sacrifice it may be for her personally, there is a chance that Markle will have to revoke her U.S. citizenship in order to preserve her new family. According to Time, if she remains a U.S. citizen, she could be audited by the IRS, which would make the Royal Family's finances public, and that's something they do not want. She's still in the waiting period to become an official British Citizen, however, and as the first American mother to the next royal prince or princess, we have to wait and see what will happen with her own American citizenship.
She lived her dreams first
This may be one of the biggest pieces of proof we all need to know that Meghan Markle is 100% ready to be a mom: simply because she has had plenty of time to achieve her own dreams before welcoming a little one. Meghan has successfully traveled, built a thriving career, and proved that she is fulfilled and content on her own before entering into marriage and family life. It doesn't always happen that way for all of us, but it's refreshing to see in a woman who will be an example to so many young women.
“I dreamt [of becoming] a successful working actress, which I can now very thankfully tick off the list. And I also dream to have a family,” the royal wife explained to Lifestyle magazine back in 2016, before Harry was on her radar. “It’s all about balance, and I have so much happiness in my career and am fortunate to travel the world and see so many amazing things—it will also be nice to be anchored to something grounded and in the same place. Raising a family will be a wonderful part of that.”
It will be wonderful, and we can't wait to see Meghan become a mom! #RoyalBabyWatch2019
