Medical Drama and Blended Families on the Rocks
Medical scares, fights and surgeries were the name of the game in celebrity news last week – it’s like a real life medical drama! Who says life doesn’t imitate art?
First up, “Dancing With the Stars” host Brooke Burke-Charvet, 41, underwent thyroid surgery last Wednesday for treatment of thyroid cancer. The model, author and mama Tweeted after her surgery that she felt “like I got hit by a car,” but told her followers and friends she was recovering and strong. The same day as her surgery, Brooke Burke-Charvet published a post on her website, ModernMom.com, detailing how she explained her diagnosis to her four children, ranging from 4 to 9 years old. Her 4-year-old son Shaya had the most trying time understanding the situation. Although Brooke Burke-Charvet admitted to some nerves and sleeplessness before the procedure, she felt prepared overall: “I’m not afraid anymore….I’m ready to just get it done and put this behind me.”
Blended families come with challenges – just ask LeAnn Rimes!
In an email leaked last week between LeAnn Rimes’ husband, Eddie Cibrian, and his ex-wife (and mother of his children) Brandi Glanville – the exes engaged in a serious war of words. Brandi accused LeAnn of addictions to alcohol and drugs, including Adderall and laxatives, and said she was “spiraling down fast”. Eddie responded with a quip that “wine and narcissism” consume his ex-wife. The email feud came to a head after an interview was published with US Weekly during which Brandi claimed her son Mason got sick after eating one of LeAnn's laxatives, found on the floor while in her care.
In happier family news, Tom Brady and supermodel wife Gisele Bundchen welcomed their second baby last week – a little girl they named Vivian Lake. The new addition joins her big brother, Benjamin, 2, and half-brother John, 5 (from Tom Brady’s previous relationship with Bridget Moynahan.) Gisele Bundchen gave birth at home, and shared a gorgeous photo of her holding hands with her new daughter on her Facebook page. “We feel so lucky to have been able to experience the miracle of birth once again..” the model wrote in a message to her fans.
Finally, after the happy news of Kate Middleton’s pregnancy and her time in the hospital for Hyperemesis Gravidarum, the Duchess was released from the hospital Thursday afternoon and greeted the waiting press (who were no doubt eager to snap a shot of her non-existent baby bump!) while holding a lovely bouquet of yellow roses in front of her tummy! Not so fast, photogs – this ain’t your mama’s princess!
Do you have any tips for LeAnn and Brandi? How do you break news about medical diagnoses to your kids?
