What You Should Know About Chiropractors and Pregnancy
When I was pregnant with my son, I finally experienced that fun little thing that I had often heard about but never felt: sciatic nerve pain.
And my solution?
Paying my first-ever visit to the chiropractor's office.
Frankly, I was scared of going to the chiropractor. I had associated the idea of a chiropractor as some sort of witch doctor, that once I had fallen under the spell, I wouldn't be able to get away from. Because isn't there some sort of rule about if you go to the chiropractor once, you have to keep going?
Turns out, I had nothing to fear, and not only did visiting the chiropractor help ease my pain, but I came to actually enjoy going.
Although I honestly had no idea what to expect from the chiropractor, I was surprised to find out from her that a lot of pregnant women actually visit a chiropractor during their pregnancies to help ease joint pain. My chiropractor even told me that it was important to get regular adjustments to keep the pelvis open and ready for delivery.
I was also surprised to find out that there are different chiropractic “styles” among doctors; one chiropractor I went to was very rough and did rather severe adjustments. His style—and the accompanying discomfort—almost scared me off the chiropractic path for good. But then I decided to switch doctors and found a chiropractor who didn't believe in severe adjustments and had a much more gentle style. Her adjustments really helped my sciatic pain, and I also discovered one more hidden gem of visiting a chiropractor.
