Jenna Bush Hager’s Themed Baby Shower
Most baby showers have gift tables filled with onesies, diapers, clothing, toys, and other newborn essentials. That was not so for the recent baby shower for Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of former president George W. Bush, thrown by NBC co-workers.
Instead of gifts the baby can wear or use, the shower guests were asked to bring their favorite children’s book with a bit of parenting advice inscribed inside the cover. Former Today Show host Meredith Viera advises, “Get a nap anytime you can,” in the book she gave, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.
Hager’s husband, Henry Hager, even showed up for the shower. The couple, who were married in 2008, has chosen not to find out the baby’s gender, though the guests at the shower think they will have a boy. Hager’s mom and dad made a recent visit to their Manhattan apartment to make a special room for the new addition. George W. Bush has painted several pieces to go into the gender-neutral room and Laura Bush helped pick out and decorate the neutral sea-foam green color scheme. Hager also received an adult book at her shower – E.L. James’ best-selling erotica, Fifty Shades of Grey- about which she said: “That’s baby number two material!”
I love baby showers that have a certain theme for gifts. I cannot even count the number of items I got that were really no use once I actually had the baby: wipe warmers, a million outfits in newborn sizes, and pacifiers we never used all just gathered dust in my closet. Especially for a couple who are well off enough to purchase all of the essentials for a baby, having a theme that allows guest to give meaningful, heart-felt gifts is great. Reading to your child is so important and I guess it is no surprise that Jenna Bush Hager would want a theme based around books as her mother is a former librarian.
