Jack O’ Lantern Planters for Halloween

If you saw the Glowing Porch Pumpkins post on Untrained Housewife you'll notice that I am not so lucky with real pumpkin Jack O' Lanterns. So when I saw this post by i Heart Naptime with Fake Pumpkin Halloween Planters I decided to adapt that idea and combine it with these super cute planted Jack O' Lanterns.

To make these you'll need:

  • An assortment of succulents and garden plants with a variety of textures.
  • As many fake pumpkins as you desire. (We picked up the large light-up pumpkin at Walmart with a face already cut out. Just remove the lighting element for this DIY. You can find fake, hollow decor pumpkins at Lowes too.)

We made all three for under $50!

Pumpkin carving for long-lasting Jack O' Lantern Planters

The two smaller pumpkins needed faces cut into them as well as the tops removed. We found that the triangle eyes worked better holding the plants than the oval eyes did. Don't forget to cut a couple holes out of the BOTTOM of the pumpkins for drainage holes!

Building the Forever Pumpkin Containers

Now carefully add your succulents and plants. Tuck them into the mouth spaces and nose holes and eye cut-outs. Find a fun hair-like plant for the top. We used a spiky succulent and a variegated grass for the two small pumpkins, and a beautiful fern for the large pumpkin. He could take a larger plant and wear it with style!

Finished Fake Pumpkin Containers for Years of Enjoyment

These turned out so beautifully and the kids loved them. They helped pick out what everyone's hair would be and which plants to use for their mouths and eyes. It was so cool to see them involved.

BEST OF ALL – I won't have any zombie pumpkins like I did last year, and you can reuse the container for multiple years without having to carve something new every time! So if you want to spice up your front porch decoration without the mess of a real Jack O' Lantern, head over to the home decor section of your favorite store and pick up a few of these.

Kids will love helping you decorate them and you can really get your money's worth by simply adding new plants next year. Easy, frugal, and awesome!
