Hilary Duff Really Gets How Hard Pregnancy Can Be

I have to admit that I was never one who got into the Disney teen shows like “Lizzie McGuire,” starring Hilary Duff. I had heard of her, of course, like any good millennial, but Hilary Duff and I just weren't BFFs in the world of celebrities. (Ha.)

But now, my respect for Hilary Duff is growing, thanks to two very important reasons:

  1. Her new show, “Younger,” which I am currently obsessed with and which has gotten me through many a sleepless night lately. If you haven't watched it, do it, you won't regret it–I am all about watching it on Hulu so I can catch up in spurts.
  2. Her honesty about how hard pregnancy can be.

In a revealing and refreshingly honest post on her Instagram account, Duff went public with her feelings about pregnancy while carrying her second child and first baby with her current boyfriend, Matthew Koma. Duff is also mom to 6-year-old Luca, whom she shares with her ex-husband Mike Comrie, so despite the fact that Duff is a relatively young mom still at only 30, it's also been quite some time since her body has been through the rigors of pregnancy. And in those six years, a lot has changed for Duff, from her relationships to her body to how she feels about being pregnant again.

In her post, Duff addressed all of the changes that pregnancy can bring and spoke candidly about how difficult it can be to bring a new life into the world. The former Disney star and current actress wrote:

“The boobs are big the belly is big the body is big. Man.. pregnancy is hard. Giving love to all mamas who make it look effortless… this journey is hard as hell and also incredibly special. Lovely to have a little life inside and to daydream of all the new adventures to come buuuut almost impossible to get my own shoes on..sick of getting up 9 times a night to pee and looking at this weird body in the mirror that is not my own at the moment. Women are so badass, this was just a note to remind myself and remind others how’s strong and beautiful you are! WE GOT THIS! 🌈❤💖🙌🏼✨”

Duff's words resonated with a lot of women, as evidenced by the comments section in her post. “Pregnancy is hard, motherhood is even harder,” agreed one fan. “With a 5-year-old and 2-year-old twins I'm starting to wonder if/when it will get easier??? 😱🤦 Thankful for you and Younger – I binged through the entire series last week while sleeping training my girls LMAO!! 😂😂😂😬”

(See, I told you the show was good!) But in all seriousness, Duff's message is so important because I feel like so many mothers look to celebrity moms as the “ideal”–they have the perfect relationships and the perfect bodies and, let's face it, all of the perfect help, so to hear them admit just how difficult pregnancy can be, both physically and emotionally, really makes a difference. As Duff herself pointed out, so many moms really do make it all look effortless, but for those of who feel like everything takes effort, from even getting dressed in the morning to keeping a meal down without puking, hearing from other moms who struggle too can help us realize that we are not alone.
