The Healthiest Meal Plan? Feed Yourself Like You Feed Your Kids

By February, many people have long since given up on their new year's resolutions. While some people might stick with their commitment to eat more healthfully with a good meal plan, evidence suggests that most people let go of their resolutions and revert to their old habits fairly quickly.

If you’re feeling frustrated by how your plans for the new year are going, you might be experiencing challenges because you chose a meal plan that’s just too restrictive. Instead of choosing a diet that eliminates certain food groups or calls on you to take in too few calories, consider following the easiest meal plan of all: feed yourself the way you want to feed your kids.

When we feed our kids we usually do so with their health and fullness in mind. And, just like it is for our kids, our own health and fullness are important. At mealtimes, choose foods that help you feel good in addition to tasting good and, for snacks, look for the balance you aim to give your kids and chose high protein foods that will keep you full between meals. Think of the foods you wouldn't give your kids too, like soda or heavily processed foods, and chose to treat your body with the same care you treat your kids' bodies with by saying no to anything you wouldn't give to your children.

When you chose to feed yourself like you like to feed your children, chances are you’re going to feel better and see the results you want to see more quickly and sustainably than you will with a crash diet that leaves you feeling hungry, miserable, and weak. You also set an example for your kids about what it means to eat healthfully and to care for oneself.

So, as we move towards spring and towards the pre-summer crash diet season that often comes in the early months of the year, opt out of crash diets and of eating foods that you wouldn't give your kids. Instead, vow to treat yourself, and your body with the care you give to your little ones. After all, you deserve it!
