Great Boy Birthday Party Ideas
We just celebrated #3’s fifth birthday.
I cried all morning at the aging up of my last baby, but he spent the entire day smiling and having a ball despite the fact that having a birthday in January, just three weeks after Christmas, in a part of the country that means business when it comes to winter can be sort of a bummer.
No one wants to even think about gift giving. And at least half of the most viable party options are completely taken off of the table. Sorta like my desire to be creative party planning following the whirlwind that is the holiday season.
My kid, completely oblivious to my absolute lack of creative genes and/or desires, had these grand plans for ringing in his 5th year of life. He had this whole Super Sweet 5 theme planned out wherein candy would be falling continuously from the sky, all of his favorite songs would be playing in a loop over the sound system, and all of the people who have ever loved him in life would be in attendance to gift him with beautiful things like $99 Lego sets, and unicorns, and maybe a giraffe. Yes, a real, live giraffe.
Basically, none of this happened.
His uninspired mother booked a last-minute suite at the local family fun center, during an awkward time slot (it was last-minute, remember). Most of his friends had other plans by the time I texted (oh yes I did) out the invite, and the party goers were mostly relatives (okay fine, his brothers), family friends, and a neighbor who happened to be crossing the street when we were leaving for the party.
But you know what?
He had a blast.
Every single moment of that day was spent with my just-turned-5-year-old smiling his face off.
He didn’t need fire jugglers or magicians (those are creepy anyway) or even goody bags to call it fun. Thank goodness because I totally forgot to make them.
All he needed was a special day to call his own spent with friends around greasy pizza and overpriced arcade games.
He brought home 6 silly bands (that’s all his tickets could snag him), a bunch of thoughtful gifts, and a day full of amazing memories.
And possibly influenza. Only time will tell on that one, but I won’t be surprised (gag, family fun centers are germy).

Here are a few great ones…
My very own ninja birthday party. This was the last time I actually did something amazing for any of The Dudes’ birthdays. I bring it up periodically to remind them that I truly am awesome, deep down anyway.
I also once threw a pretty spectacular carnival birthday party. People (mostly me) talked about that for months!
