A Fun Healthy Treat: Picnic Fruit Kebabs
Summer is one of my favorite seasons when it comes to enjoying fresh fruit. It is the time for berries; blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and melons such as cantaloupe, honeydew, and the picnic staple on all tables — watermelon. A fun way to enjoy these sweet treats and make them stand out on your barbecue table is to create picnic fruit kebabs.
When making appetizers or desserts, it seems more fun when placed on a skewer and better yet, it makes it easier to eat too. The best part of this quick and easy snack is threading all your favorite flavors together. This is a great way to get the kiddos involved in preparation of your next outing. Grab your favorite fruits, wash them, and – if need be – cut them in large pieces. I leave grapes and blueberries whole, but for strawberries, melon or pineapple, I like to cut into halves or in big chunks. This allows for the skewer to go through the fruit without it falling apart. Place everything in a bowl and let the kids create their own kebab designs. There is no wrong way to make a fruit kebab … some may be all grapes or some may have none — it’s all good, and good for you too!
Because these are pre-made, they travel well, too. Place kebabs in a Ziploc bag and when ready to have at your next picnic or barbecue, place on a tray or stick in a small watermelon; the rind is thicker on this type of melon and once the kebabs are gone, you can cut up the melon and enjoy that too.
Simple summer fun!
