From Oscar Glam to Morning Rush Makeup

I’ve spent portions of tonight watching the Oscars. Portions that weren’t spent getting kids to bed, reading blogs, or catching up on my magazines. Honestly, I don’t see enough films to be that caught up in who is winning what – one of the few nominated films I saw was – unsurprisingly – Brave. (Congrats on the win!) Instead, I love to watch to see what the stars are wearing, their hair, and the gorgeous makeup.

It’s not often that I have the occasion to dress up in Oscar-worthy style. Okay – so not often = never. My typical style consists of jeans and Converse or jeans and boots or jeans and flip-flops. Notice a theme here? But that doesn’t stop me from loving the parade of glittery gorgeousness parading along the red carpet.

And while I may not have a wardrobe to match these stars, I can take some cues from their makeup styles. A personal favorite has to be Adele. (Don't get me started on wishing I could sing like her!) Admittedly, when I was a new mom I was never rocking the perfect face and manicured nails quite like she does. However, I do see the attraction in looking a little polished to perk up your day when your typical wardrobe is covered in questionable spots (spit up? snot? last night’s dinner?) and you didn’t get nearly enough sleep the night before.

My children are far past the newborn stage, but most mornings I am still feeling like I didn’t get quite enough sleep and my clothes still have questionable spots (as my children seem to view me as a human tissue). As a result, although I’d like to rock a flawless face, I’ve pared my routine down to three essentials: foundation, mascara, and lip gloss.

As of late, I’ve got several favorites in each category. For foundation, Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Coverage is a hands-down winner. It’s not cheap, but it works great and lasts. When it’s time for mascara, I start with a quick curl, then swipe on some Maybelline the Colossal. My usual standard is the no-fail Great Lash, but this is a new favorite. One coat and I’m ready to go. Finally, it is lip gloss time. I’m not much of a lipstick girl, but I need gloss. I have favorites from across the board – from MAC’s Lipglass to the Lip Smackers I *borrow* from my six year old. Lately, I’m revisiting an old friend – Clinique’s Black Honey.

So, while tomorrow at school drop-off I won’t be wearing sequins or showing off a smoky eye, I can still feel pretty good in my five minute face. What about you? What are your favorite products and tricks for looking good – fast? And what was your favorite Oscar look?
