Free, Fun Things to Do with the Kids that Won’t Break the Bank
While we often think of ‘things to do’ as ‘things that cost money' this doesn’t have to be the case. There are plenty of free things we can do with our kids that will make happy memories without breaking the bank.
Here are a few of our favorites.
1. Sock hop. The girls and I love to dance. Some nights become sock hop nights or dance party nights. We get dressed up (or down, depending on our moods); get together a collection of music (sometimes we borrow CDs from the library if we are doing a ‘theme’ night); and we dance. We may have ‘dance offs’, where we each pick a song and dance for the others. We might just let the music play and spend our time dancing together. It’s a wonderful, fun way to spend an evening – and it’s something I believe the girls will remember forever.
2. Game night. Obviously this isn’t a ‘new’ idea, but it’s one I think families often forget about. Game night can be anything from pick-up-sticks to cards to Monopoly, depending on your children’s ages. We pick up games at consignment stores and the girls always get one game on Christmas morning.
On game night, the television goes off (though, sometimes, the music stay on softly in the background). We make popcorn and hot chocolate and enjoy each other’s company while playing games and spending time together.
3. Puppet shows and plays. We are a theatrical family and enjoy performing for each other. Some nights we will create plays based on books we love or perform puppet shows that we write together. We perform in front of daddy or grandma, and sometimes just in front of each other. Because we love the arts and want to get our children interested in them as well, we try to incorporate that into the time we spend together.
4. Star gazing. Not too long ago we purchased a telescope for daddy. On clear weekend nights, we pull the telescope onto the back porch, bundle up beneath a blanket, and do a little star gazing. My husband loves science, so he usually talks to us about the planets: how they were formed, what space is made of, their relationship to Earth. It’s a wonderful way to spend time outside with the family.
What do you enjoy doing with your family that doesn’t cost money but makes lasting memories?
