4 Things That Totally Count When You’re a Mom

Ohhh ,expectations. Nothing teaches you to let them go quite like having a baby. Before my son was born I dreamed of calm, peaceful newborn snuggles, bought mommy and me workout DVDs, and wondered why my OBGYN instructed me to wait six weeks after giving birth before hitting the gym. I planned to utilize my maternity leave to re-organize my home, learn a few new skills, and make sure we ate healthy, home-cooked meals as a family every single night (it’s okay if you’re laughing now).

Two years of dirty diapers, sleepless nights, and dinner after toddler dinner strewn across the kitchen floor have taught me to keep my expectations in check. I’ve learned to cut myself some slack and let go of feeling bad about the things I can’t do to make room to feel good about the things I CAN do. In the spirit of keeping my expectations in check and feeling good about what life throws my way,

When you’re a mom…

  1. Chick-fil-A on preschool night totally counts as a night on the town

Putting on real clothes? Check. Meeting up with friends? Check. Conversation, fun, and a solid dinner? Check, check, and check. Sure, your nights out used to start at eight instead of ending at seven, but who cares about what the clock says when you’ve got actual adults to talk to.

  1. Chapstick totally counts as lipstick

Getting dressed up for a night on the town used to mean a brand new outfit, a hair style that required a heating tool, and a full face of make-up. Now, as you head out the door, you throw on some Spanx and something clean, run some brand-new Chapstick on your lips, and feel good about how dressed up you look.

  1. Netflix on the couch totally counts as a date

Spending quality time with your spouse is really important. It’s also really hard to get out of the house now that you have a little one. So, if you call it a date, it becomes a date. Tuesdays at our house call for something fancy for dinner (take-out of course), an early bedtime for my son, and a funny movie on Netflix as we cuddle on the couch. It might be simple, but we couldn’t be happier with our mid-week quality time!

  1. Taking your kid to the park in workout clothes totally counts as a workout

Chasing your toddler across the playground is basically sprints, picking up the tossed jackets and cups and paci's they leave in their wake is basically squats, and, the never ending “uppy please” is a total arm workout. So yes, dear husband, when you see me in my workout clothes and ask if I’ve been working out, yes I have. And, fyi, just getting my pre-baby leggings up past my new hips is a workout in itself.

So mamas, the next time you’re tempted to feel bad about not going out or not working out or not getting dressed up like you used before baby, just sit back, relax, and think of all the things in your life that totally count now that you’re a mom!
