4 Fantastic 1st Birthday Party Themes

The first birthday is always the most special, as so much happens in the first year, and it is the first party you're throwing for your baby. If you need ideas for a fun party, here are some great ideas from four moms.

Alice in Wonderland

“I chose an Alice in Wonderland theme, but substituted my daughter's name in. I've always wanted to do this theme for one of my kids, as there are so many fun games and decorations you can use with Wonderland. And all kids love Wonderland!

I made almost everything – from large playing cards, to the gingham placements, and flower arrangements. I bought a few things – like the flamingos, from Oriental Trading. For games, we did flamingo croquet and a bean bag toss through a big heart, and a scavenger hunt with signs pointing the wrong way. All of the drinks and food had ‘eat me' and ‘drink me' signs. The biggest hit though was a banner I made of pictures of Astrid – showing each month of her first year. I loved the fun banners and buntings.”

“I chose an Owl theme as his nursery is decorated with owls. I made most of the decorations and party food. I also like to have a few fun and simple activities for the kids, like when I sent them on an owl egg hunt. I decorated felt baskets with an owl, then used Easter eggs as owl ones. I had each party guest fill out a little owl sheet of paper about different thoughts they had for the birthday boy such as:

My favorite moment of your first year _____ and Today you ______.

My favorite parts of the party were the owl birthday banner, and the birthday tree collage I made with photos of each month from his first year of life.”

“We went with a very simple cupcake theme, due to the busy time of year (Christmas Eve!). We had adorable party hats made from a lovely little Etsy shop that had cupcakes sewn on the front and a number ‘1' embroidered. They also had pom-pom tops and polka-dots. The twins wore matching one-piece outfits that had tulle skirts attached, and an embroidered cupcake on the front. I also baked an extra large cupcake for each of the girls for their smash cake. We also reused a handmade pink, green and white ‘Happy Birthday' signed from my oldest daughter's birthday party, which was purchased from Etsy. I also picked up two little pink sock monkeys, a last minute addition to the decor.

Etsy is a great resource for handmade party signs, cupcake toppers, printable invitations and even lovely fabric party hats like those we purchased. It's a great place to do your shopping for birthday parties because you can do it while the kids are napping, and from the comfort of your own home. The personalization factor is always nice as well.”

“For Cameron's first birthday, I chose a Monster theme, because we used to call him our little monster (he used to growl a lot). The monster theme was most evident in the cake and cake pops I made, as well as in a sign I created directing people to the party room. We had the party in a church, so I used minimal decorations.”

Awesome ideas! Her first birthday will be two weeks from now. Since it’s a midweek, we have to move it on Saturday. Now, I am thinking of having a little decoration in our home even if it’s just the three of us 🙂

  2. For our son’s first birthday, we had an "It’s Bubbly Fun to be One!" Party!! We had tons and tons of bubbles for all the kids to play with!! From the ones you blow, soap bubbles, and bubble gum!! We had kiddy pools full of bubble liquid and let the kids use hula hoops and tennis rackets to make bubbles as well!! The cake was a rubber Ducky surrounded by cupcakes that looked like bubbles, it was a "bubble bath!"

I did a "Tea with the Mad Hatter" party for my daughter and it was awesome! I made things like mome raths and had signs up saying follow the mome raths. Upside down and crooked tea cups and tea pots decorated the tables. We had the walls covered in green with "rose trees" that had white roses with red paint dripping off of them. We played "pin the grin on the cat" instead of using a donkey we had a painting of the Cheshire Cat done and used cardboard grins. We also had a very large white rabbit painted holding a watch and he had a sign that said Your Late! The invitations were scrolls with tea bags attached. Everyone had a great time!
