Just Found Out You’re Pregnant? Here’s What to Do Right Away
Take a deep breath
For many women, finding out that they’re pregnant is one of the biggest moments of their life. Whether you’ve been trying for a baby for a while or your pregnancy is a total surprise, it’s only natural that you’re going to have some really big feelings when you actually discover you're pregnant. It’s also natural that some of your feelings might seem to be contradictory. You might feel scared but excited, nervous but happy, or even angry but hopeful. Either way, take a deep breath!
Find a doctor
No matter how you feel about your pregnancy, it’s important to find a doctor right away. Prenatal care (the care you receive while you're pregnant) can have a huge impact on your health and the health of your baby. If you’re not sure what you want to do or need help making big decisions, a doctor can also give you important information that will help you make decisions that feel right for you.
Tell who you want to tell
Telling the people closest to you about your pregnancy can feel exhilarating, terrifying, or both. Remember, who you choose to tell about your pregnancy right away is totally up to you. Do your best to identify people who will be supportive, loving, and encouraging and consider telling them first. Whether you feel like keeping things under wraps for a little while or shouting the news from the rooftops, remember it is your news and you get to control who you tell and when.
Take another deep breath
Even though you might not be feeling much different yet, big things are happening in your body. You’re also already changing and likely thinking about decisions in a whole new way. The prospect of putting someone else before yourself (forever) can feel a little daunting. If you’re getting overwhelmed with information and decisions it’s okay to step back from thinking about your pregnancy and relax in a way that makes you happy. Consider grabbing lunch with a good friend (and not talking about your baby at all), getting your nails done, or heading to the library to check out the book you’ve had on your list for a while.
Start to make a plan
As a parent, you’ll be making a lot of plans. Start now by thinking of what you’ll need to do over the next couple of months to get where you want to be by the time your baby arrives. Take a few minutes to write down what you want for yourself around the time baby is born (to be in your own apartment, to have a certain amount of money saved up, to be in a job that will give you maternity leave etc.) and then think backwards about the things you’ll need to do to get you where you want to be.
