Family-Only Sleepovers Offer a Night of In-House Fun

If my wife and I allowed our children to do sleepovers whenever they asked, they never be home on the weekends. As such, we like our kids to partake in moderation.

That’s because sleepovers can be tough on everyone whether you’re hosting or it’s on the road. It’s not necessarily the sleepover itself, because that can be a lot of fun:  Having your kids enjoy their friends or cousins, enjoying delicious treats and watching movies. That’s all good, and resolute parents may even have built an immunity to the noise while trying to sleep.

The difficult part is the post-game show. The clean-up. The tired kids. The cranky moods. The crash down after a night of ice-cream-sundae-sugar-high.

But there is an alternative to all of this that allows you to be a part of the action rather than merely watch from a distance, and it also affords you a little more parental control – and that’s to hold a family-only sleepover in your own home. There’s a lot of advantages to this ultimate in-house staycation.

New experience – Give your kids a new perspective by spending a night in your home like never before. Sleep in the living room, family room, den, or even mom and dad’s room – just make it somewhere different than their bedrooms. And everyone has got to be on the floor to make it really camping-worthy memorable. The best part is encouraging your kids to sleep alongside a window where they can look up at the stars to feel like they’re outside.

The best cure for a tired parent – If you’ve had a particularly tiresome week and are begging for a night at home, the in-house sleepover is a surefire way to allow you to veg out while still spending time with your kids. If you make it a fun night for them, they’ll always get excited about staying in for the night.

Room changers – You can also set up indoor forts, tents or cozy homes with a lot of blankets, card tables and chairs. Dig out some Christmas lights and plug ‘em in. Who cares if you flip up the room upside down for a night? The fun your kids will be having will be totally worth it.

Cozy wozy – There’s nothing like getting cozy with your kids when you sleep together as a family. Sleeping in mom and dad’s bed isn’t always the best option, but snuggling together on a floor in sleeping bags is always A-OK.

Friendships grow – It’s a lot of fun watching your kids get along with other friends, but it’s even more rewarding to see siblings spend time with each other in a different setting and get along as a family. It’s these kind of nights where you’ll see them connect in a new way and become best friends.

A different kind of movie night – Netflix and Redbox are always fun ways to spend the evening, but so are watching family videos from when the kids – or you – were babies. There’s nothing like teaching your kids about the past to appreciate the present.

Memories – When your kids grow up, they’ll be yearning for the days when they camped out in your own home. Chances are, they’ll pass the tradition on to their families.
