Family Halloween Costumes the Whole Family Will Love
Halloween is around the corner and that means it's time to start thinking about costumes! Looking for the best family Halloween costumes or the best sibling costume ideas? Look no further!
Jodie G. from Washington, DC took family Halloween costumes to a new level once she had her daughter. She started looking for the best family Halloween costume ideas when her daughter was just an infant. Jodie started off coming up with all of the ideas, but now that her daughter and son are old enough they take turns picking the theme each year. She finds that she often has to source costumes from different places. So don't give up if you can't find a costume to fit your theme for every family member from the same place. Jodie also finds that she can use some pieces from clothing her family already owns for costumes and she tries to reuse as many pieces from past costumes as possible.
Family Farmers: Babies like to be snug like a pea in a pod! Use this idea for a great baby Halloween costume for inspiration and turn it into a Halloween family farmer costume by getting the grown-ups dressed up like farmers, something that should be easy with clothes you already have.
Flowers: Like the nature theme but not sure you love the idea of being farmers? Check out this pollinator family costume idea. Mom is dressed as a bumblebee and her daughter wore the best toddler costume for the theme – a bee skirt and wings. Her husband was game for the theme as well and dressed as a blooming flower. Another take on the flower theme is to dress the kids as flowers, or “flower children,” and parents can dress as hippies.
Wizard of Oz: Many of the best family costume ideas will be inspired by movies. Check out these great costumes from the Wizard of Oz. Even a family of three can pull off being the cast of a movie! This family brought along a small scarecrow prop to round out the costumes, but even without an extra, the family is instantly recognizable.
Movies and More Movies: Disney movies are classics for a reason! Check out fun ideas like these family costumes from Toy Story, Peter Pan, and of course Frozen. Even little brothers can get into Frozen costumes when they get to choose characters like Olaf. Alice in Wonderland is a great idea for family costumes with options ranging from pretty dresses to the Mad Hatter.
Thing One and Thing Two: Looking for a classic sibling costume for Halloween? Look no farther than everyone's favorite mischief maker, The Cat in the Hat. The great thing about this family Halloween costume is that works as well for families with two children as it does for larger families. There is no shortage of how many “Things” can be added to the mix!
Taco and Taco Truck: Look no farther than your child's favorite meal for inspiration! Jane E. from Washington, DC was looking for the best Halloween costumes for brothers and made a Taco and Taco Truck costumes for her boys. Parent costume options could easily be added into the mix by dressing as a taco seller or a topping.
Favorite Book: Look to your favorite books for inspiration! Check out this fantastic family Harry Potter costume. Hogwarts robes are great for Halloween since it's easy to hide warm clothes (or even a jacket) underneath.
Storm the Castle: Have a girl who is dead-set on being a princess for Halloween and not sure how to incorporate that into a family costume idea? When this happened to us, we wound up with a Medieval theme. The group included an older brother as a knight in shining armor, a toddler as a dragon, and another sister as a damsel in distress.
Mini-You: Some families are very into elaborate themed costumes. Other families like the idea but aren't quite so enthusiastic. If you fall into the latter category, check out these adorable matching Mommy and Me outfits from Moderne Child. Check out the Nadia Lace Dress that can be worn in black for matching Audrey Hepburn costumes with some faux pearls and tiaras. Or wear it in red/orange with green accents for you and your mini to be a pumpkin patch. These dresses are great because they can be worn well after Halloween is over.
Be Creative: None of these ideas sound good? Don't panic. My family loves browsing the seasonal Spirit Halloween stores that pop-up seasonally each year. Don't be afraid to stretch your theme ideas. An adorable Red Devil paired with a Soul Taker costume can make a fun themed costume idea that can satisfy a little girl's desire for a tutu with a spookier option.
