One of the easiest ways to make a costume for kids is to start with a pillowcase.  It's a simple shape that can virtually be made into any character or theme imaginable. And… it's super inexpensive, especially if you start with a pillowcase you already have.

We love these quick and easy DIY costumes that you can make for dress-up any time of the year.  They're great for Halloween, but if you store all the costumes in one place, that is easily accessible, you'll find they get used all year long.  And what's better for creative play than dressing up?

Our first foray into making a costume from a pillowcase came about when we needed a last minute costume for one of the kids. Since then, we have discovered a few tips and tricks to make your costume-making pretty foolproof and so we wanted to share those with our friends here at EverydayFamily.  Once you've been convinced to the ease of this process, be sure to click over and grab our tutorials at ZiggityZoom (they links are provided at the end of the tips list).

  • Always wash and iron the pillowcase as your first step.
  • Before starting any cutting, measure the length of the pillowcase to your child, to get the sizing right.

  • For preschool children, you may need to trim off the bottom of the pillowcase.
  • Cut the neck opening smaller than you think you need.  This is one dimension that always looks bigger than it is.  For most costumes you don't want a costume hanging off the shoulders.

  • Sticky-back Velcro can be used to make the costume smaller for thin children.  Just double over fabric under the armhole and apply velcro to make it fit.  You will then have a re-sizeable costume for another year.
  • To avoid fraying, dab a thin layer of white glue to cut edges.

  • Save scraps of felt and ribbons to use as decorative add-ons to costumes.
  • Keep a watch for colorful and inexpensive pillowcases and buy them when you find them.  We have a stack of different colors stored away that we plan to make into costumes.

Sometimes you will come across some fantastic pillowcases, like a giraffe pattern, that are very special.  Be sure to snap those up when you see them because they are often only sold for a short period of time. Have fun and be sure to remind the kids that they can play dress-up any time of the year.
