Earn Extra Income for Your Family
If you have babies, you know how expensive they are. According to Business Insider, the median household income in the US is $59,039. And nearly one in three families (32 percent) report spending 20 percent or more of their annual household income on child care, according to Care.com. Now, maybe one parent stays at home which saves the cost of childcare, but that also means there is a loss of income due to that parent not working.
What if I told you there was a way you could earn a good amount extra money for your family without adding another job? Interested? Here’s how …
By becoming an Airbnb host! Have a guest room in your home that remains unused 95% of the time? Put it to use by hosting in your home! Live in town with family? Earn extra money on occasional weekends by having sleepovers with them, and listing your whole home out while you’re gone! Travel plans? Earn money to pay for your vacation by listing your home while you’re away! Own a vacation house that you’re not able to use as often as you’d like? Rather than leaving it sitting empty, let it earn money for you! Your home can even help ease the Burden of Holiday Expenses!
Interested, but still have questions as to how you’d actually make it work? I chatted with a close friend, mama, and Airbnb home owner to get the inside scoop!
Q: What percentage of your mortgage are you able to make each month, on average?
A: We were able to cover our mortgage for December-February of this past winter season by listing our home for only a few weekends.
Q: How much time do you spend each month managing your Airbnb?
A: We're seasonal since it's in the mountains, so we don't list during the spring and fall; mostly in the winter.
Q: How many of your personal belongings do you put away when your home is booked?
A; We lock the closets in the bedrooms for our personal belongings and a cabinet in the kitchen for our private stock of wine/liquor.
Q: Do you clean your home yourself or have you hired someone?
A: We hire a company in the town our home is in and charge a cleaning fee to the renters.
Q: Can you share any tips for first-time owners listing their home?
A: Stocked kitchens are appealing (crockpot, coffee machine, blender …). Put away anything that's super personal or of value.
Afraid that it would be too much work to hide all of your kid’s toys and games? Leave some of them out! (That’s what this Airbnb owner does!) When my family travels, we almost always rent through Airbnb and look for family friendly homes. It’s a total bonus if there are toys available for my two-year-old to explore! Nothing beats new (to him) activities!
