DIY Frame Tray

diy frame tray

When I saw this idea while searching for more DIY ideas, I decided that I just had to make myself a pretty tray out of a frame that I can individualize for years to come.

I decorated mine with a trellis pattern, but you could personalize your with photos, letters, movie ticket stubs, etc. – the possibilities are endless.

This tray also makes a wonderful gift, don't you think? Who wouldn't want a tray for their coffee table or kitchen?

You need these supplies:

  • large frame (I bought mine for $10 at TJMaxx)
  • drill
  • ruler
  • 2 cabinet door handles (I found mine at the dollar store)
  • optional: spray paint
  • optional: if the screws from the handles are longer than the thickness of the frame, buy screws that fit or cut down the existing ones.
  • optional: little floor protector pads

Frame Tray Tutorial:

  1. Start by figuring out where you want to mount the handles on the tray. Find the middle of the shorter sides of the frame and then figure out where you need to make and drill the holes. I put my handle sideways so I can see where the holes are for the screws and marked my frame accordingly.
  2. Make sure you use the right-size drill bit that is comparable to the size of the screws that come with the handles, and drill the four holes.
  3. If your handles need spray painting, take them outside or in a well-ventilated area of your home, protect the ground or floor, and spray the first coat on the handles. Let the paint dry and repeat until you are happy with the result. My handles could have used a second coat, but I was too eager to assemble the tray to wait; that's why the gold is shining through the paint which actually gives them an interesting antiqued look.
  4. Take out the back of the frame and insert whatever you wish to display on the top side of the tray. I was drawn to making something modern-looking with a trellis pattern that is so popular right now, so I bought contact paper with that pattern.
  5. If you think you won't change what you're displaying in the frame, then use strong tape or even hot glue to secure the back of the frame to the frame so it can hold the weight of the items you will be placing on the tray. If you want the option to change it, just use strong tape that you can cut into if need be.
  6. Once the paint is totally dry on the handles, screw them to the frame. If the screws are longer than the thickness of the frame, you'll need to cut them or buy shorter ones. (Or buy handles that can be screwed in from the top with shorter screws, like the blogger did in the example I linked to.)
  7. If you are worried that the screws on the back of the frame might scratch your furniture, add little floor protector pads usually intended to go on chairs to the four corners of the frame on the back.
