Do you like to set the table with beautiful linens? Do you love a chic tablescape for special occasions or entertaining your friends? Either way, having a table that's put together somehow makes the dining exprience within your family or among friends that much better.

If you are like me, you are rushing around most days and throwing together dinner at the last minute that making a special effort to use the fine china and your favorite tablecloth just doesn't happen enough.

Well, I want to encourage you to take the time to break out the special linens and dishes for more than just special occasions. an added bonus is that  cotton napkins used regularly are better for the environment! If you put your own stamp on an otherwise plain cotton napkin – with bleach in this case — you'll want to use them every day.

I decorated a set of napkins with bleach art, and I could see how this could get addicting because the result is so instant and you get to make something unique and one-of-a-kind. Once you check out the napkin tutorial, be sure to take a peek at the many other ways you can use bleach art for unique crafting and gifts!

You will need these supplies:

  • cotton napkins in your color choice
  • bleach
  • glass container
  • pencil
  • toothpick

  1. This is pretty simple, but first a word of caution: don't attempt making bleach art with the kids around, or when you are rushing. Make sure to wear old clothes that can get stained, just in case, and wear protective gloves. Also protect the table you are using to make the bleach art.
  2. Pour the bleach in the glass containers.
  3. Take a pencil and dip the eraser into the bleach, and then start making your design by putting drops of bleach on the napkin. I wanted to make little flowers, but this idea of fireworks is pretty as well.
  4. Instead of just using the pencil, you can also make a thinner design with a toothpick. You might not see much of a change at first, but after a few minutes you will see the color of napkin fade.
  5. If there is excess bleach on the napkins – there was in my case because I didn't wash them before adding the bleach – blot the excess bleach from the napkin.
  6. Wash the napkins before your first use.

Now you are ready to set the table with napkins no one else has!

6 More Bleach Art Ideas:

  • Experiment with other tools to create different designs: different sponges and paintbrushes that you don't plan to use for anything else would work well to create a variety of different designs.
  • Pick up a bleach pen and draw various designs or monograms on your napkins.
  • Create an individualized napkin for each person in your family either in design or by assigning each member a number and make napkins with one, two, three, and four dots! If you have a lot of family members, this allows for everyone to have an assigned napkin they always use.
  • Polka dots would look great around the whole perimeter of the napkin or if you have the time, polka dots all over the napkin.
  • Repeat the same design from the napkins on a matching tablecloth.
  • Use bleach art to decorate a T-Shirt by using stick on stencils or painters tape to create your desired design! The key to success is to place something inside of the shirt like a piece of cardboard so the bleach doesn't soak through to the other side.
