In Defense of the Sloppy Summer Wardrobe

Parents who love to dress their kids up usually get excited for summer. Along with the smocked shortalls, seersucker sundresses, and sweet sandals, there are summer-themed accessories galore. While it’s true that kids dressed in their summer best are beyond adorable, I’m a big supporter of another type of summer wardrobe: The Sloppy Summer Wardrobe.

Sloppy Summer Wardrobe can consist of any number of particular clothing items: The too small St. Patrick’s day dress your little one won’t dare part with. The finger-paint-stained shirt handed down from an older sibling. And the jean shorts that are more hole than shorts. All fit neatly within the bounds of the Sloppy Summer Wardrobe.

The Sloppy Summer Wardrobe certainly won’t win your child any fashion awards but it will do a few things. It will allow your kid to stretch and run and play with ease. And it will give you the peace of mind not to worry about them staining or ripping or getting their clothes dirty. Implementing a Sloppy Summer Wardrobe will also save you countless hours of getting ready time as when your child calls out, “Mom, can I wear …’ Your answer will always be “Yes!” Yes to mismatched rain boots, yes to too-big baseball caps, yes to torn shirt and stained socks and tacky t-shirts!

Along with the saving of your sanity and time, the Sloppy Summer Wardrobe will also save you some serious cash because it doesn’t require you to buy anything at all. All you have to do to put together the essentials for the Sloppy Summer Wardrobe is to say, “Yes!” to all the hand me downs and pass-alongs from friends, relatives, and co-workers. You can also boost your Sloppy Summer Wardrobe by simply not getting rid of your child’s favorite clothes when they beg you not to toss them (even though the shorts are so tight they can barely zip them and the shirts have been showing their belly for months).

Sure, you might get some serious side-eye as your preschooler walks through the grocery store barefooted and with goggles as a headband. But the Sloppy Summer Wardrobe is worth more than any side eye you’ll end up with.

This summer, instead of busting your wallet and spending your mornings trying to stuff your kiddos into clothes you’ll spend all day begging them not to get dirty, implement the Sloppy Summer Wardrobe. Then watch your kids laugh and play as they get their already sloppy clothes even dirtier this summer. Enjoy!
