5 Surefire Ways to Fight Heartburn and Indigestion During Pregnancy

I'm five months pregnant and heartburn is already causing me some major pain. In fact, I thought about replacing the Pez in my son's Pez dispenser with Tums and carrying it around in my purse. That's how often I've been popping these tummy soothers. 

But why does heartburn affect pregnant women like me, so badly?

According to experts on WebMD, pregnancy related heartburn is caused by a few different reasons:

“Heartburn in pregnancy may occur because of changing hormone levels, which can affect the muscles of the digestive tract and how different foods are tolerated. Pregnancy hormones can cause the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscular valve between the stomach and esophagus) to relax, allowing stomach acids to splash back up into the esophagus. In addition, the enlarged uterus can crowd the abdomen, pushing stomach acids upward.”

Well, this would explain why I've sworn off Italian food for the next several months, along with all other acidic and spicy foods. But there are ways to curb indigestion during pregnancy. I, for one, have stopped eating close to bedtime and have added more mild recipes to my diet in addition to the aforementioned Tums consumption. But, I also did some research to find some key ways to fight off heartburn in the event there are other triggers down the line that may contribute to my already very regular heartburn. 

According to Health.com, here are five sure-fire ways to fight pregnancy related heartburn:

  • Eat small meals instead of three big meals. This keeps you from feeling overfull and allows nutrients to stay with you all day long.
  • Sip liquids instead of drinking one big glass of water at a time, because this may cause acid reflux.
  • Sitting, standing or walking after dinner helps acid stay where it's supposed to – down in the stomach. Avoid any activities that require bending over. This will cause acid to flow upwards.
  • Don't eat right before bed. Lying down on a full stomach is a recipe for disaster.
  • Eat slowly. It helps you digest better and also keeps you from overeating.
