Who do you imagine your little girl becoming? Do you have a vision for her? A long time ago in a land far away, called graduate school, I spent my time researching environmental versus genetic impact of who we become. I concluded that as parents we certainly DO have impact on who our children become. However, so does genetics. My theory was proven when I became a parent myself. It simply seems that there are some qualities that are just WHO my child is, from the day she was born.
I was reminded of all this while recently watching a parade with my family. I love a good parade. It’s everyday America, everyday people all coming together to celebrate something. In this case, it was celebrating a small town's contribution as a leading producer of grapes. Yes, a parade celebrating grapes.
Along with the marching bands (my favorite as a former band geek!), fire trucks, and politicians, there was the "Dazzling Divas" dance troupe. Their outfits were actually very cool. They were sparkly, orange, and they had silver pom-poms. The silver pom-poms immediately caught my daughter's attention. After all, who doesn't like sparkly silver pom-poms, especially when they are grooving to a good beat?
I turned to the hubby and said, "I'm not sure I would want our kiddo to be a dazzling diva." He smiled and remarked, "Yeah, I think some of these girls are one step away from becoming Honey Boo Boo." The comment made me roar with laughter. Though I have never seen the show (after all, it's been three years with no cable in our household), even I know what a train wreck Honey Boo Boo is. How did this child get to where she is? Where will she go from here? Who will she become?
All the talk of Honey Boo Boo and her sass made me question again the impact of how we raise our children. The impact of what we feed them, their daily routines, our everyday interactions, the clothes we put them in, the places we take them, and who we connect them with (whether teachers, neighbors, family or friend), all DO matter.
With all this said, I definitely decided the "Dazzling Divas" are not right for my kiddo or our goals for her. What about you? Would you sign your little one up for a dance troupe like the "Dazzling Divas?" What choices are you making for your daughter and how do you believe this will affect who they will become as they grow?
Whatever it is, I definitely hope that Honey Boo Boo is not on your goal list.
