Creating Your Own Pregnancy Glow

Before my first pregnancy, I used to imagine what I would look like with a baby bump: tall, lean, with a perfect circle popping out from my waistline—not too big and not too small. I was also glowing, with great skin, a great haircut, and the most adorable maternity clothes you've ever seen.

Clearly, I thought I was going to be Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, during my pregnancy. Boy, was I so wrong!

The window of time where you actually might be able to achieve all of the things I listed is ridiculously small—it's that short period between finally not needing to run for the toilet every time you see a piece of raw chicken during the first trimester (and sometimes beyond!) and being so big in the third trimester that you wonder how on earth you'll make it to your due date. So, what are we talking? A week, tops?

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to keep yourself feeling fresh and vibrant during pregnancy. (I don't know of anything that will get your hair looking like the Duchess's, however!)

Glowing Skin Takes Work

Whether you naturally come by this well-known pregnancy folklore or not, you could always manufacture it yourself! While I'm a fairly low-maintenance girl when it comes to my skin-care ritual (washcloth and hot water, anyone?), during pregnancy, I do take more time, just for the fact that my pores seem to be more open and susceptible to dirt and grime. A moisturizing facial wipe or a scrub really does invigorate your skin and can make the mornings a little easier.

Feeling Comfortable in Your Clothes

Even if you don't splurge on tons of maternity threads, it's important not to “muddle through” nine months of your body constantly changing. Find a few versatile outfits that you can mix and match and dress up or down. Living in the same pair of pants day in and day out gets old quick.

Love on Your Hair

There will be plenty of time for the obligatory “Mom Ponytail” after you give birth. Right now, you need to take advantage of the shiny, healthy, thick mane that is one of the better perks of pregnancy. Try out a new cut. Spend time perfecting a new style at home. Splurge on extra visits to the salon over the course of you pregnancy. I know I feel like a new woman after having my hair professionally done, and that is exactly the kind of pampering I need during those really tough days. (And, again, if someone could give me Kate’s hairdresser's name, that would be great …)

Pregnancy can be very taxing on our bodies as well as our minds and our overall appearance. By taking the time to focus on the little things, even though they might seem like minor things, you'll be able to keep going on those days you're feeling particularly sluggish.

    This is my first child so I’m finding all these posts very interesting. Unfortunately, i don’t see how i can find the time to pamper myself better work and school. But I do find that people tell me that I have a glow whenever i’ve been around the father of the child for a couple of hours. This tends to make me happy and sets butterfly’s off in my stomach. The baby seems to enjoy these times also because though I am nauseous most of the time, it seems to go away when im smiling constantly at his father. (It doesn’t hurt that his father gives great massages 😀 )

    As hard as it is to be working full time while pregnant, I find getting enough rest and sleep does wonders for me. I am and always have been, very low maintenence. ( I couldnt be bothered with make up unless i have to go to something important) getting a good night’s sleep gives me a glow that i can wear all day. that and a smile.

    I know I always felt better when I felt like a whale there towards the end, when I put on makeup and did my hair. It just does something to the confidence to feel pretty. It was also handy to take a couple of simple salt baths, Not too hot, but that was relaxing for sure.
    I think it’s still important to feel this way after giving birth too though. While I didn’t seem to care much about how I looked or dressed for the first couple of months, cuz I was too tired to care- now that there’s a routine and better sleep for us all- I just simply feel better overall when I take the time to do something for myself, even if it’s just attempting to do my nails.
