Baby It’s Cold Out There: Indoor Activities For When It’s Just too Cold to Go Out
When the temperature drops to a certain degree even the most outdoorsy family tends to head inside. If you’re used to being on the go, staying home with little ones can feel like quite a challenge. Check out the tips below to keep your preschooler happy (and your house from being destroyed) with these indoor activities next time it’s too cold to go outside.
Whether it’s homemade bread, some delicious cookies, or a meal like spaghetti and meatballs, preschoolers are known for loving to help out in the kitchen. When you’ve got a cold day on your hands, take a little time to prepare by pre-measuring your ingredients and propping up some illustrated instructions and then invite your little one into the kitchen to become chef's helper for a day!
Even if you don’t consider yourself crafty, your preschooler will probably love your attempt with any craft you try! To make your next cold day extra fun spend a little time rounding up odds and ends around the house and then pass them along to your preschooler with your blessing to do whatever they want with the goods. With some odds and ends like plastic cutlery, dried out markers, old plastic toys, and empty boxes, your little one will amaze you with their creativity.
Cold days are the perfect time to break out the ‘making’ toys you usually don’t love getting out because of the mess they make. Train tracks, Legos, Duplos, Knex or other building toys are sure to keep your babe busy for a long time. If you don’t have any building toys, make your own by taking out toothpicks or dry spaghetti and marshmallows and showing your child how to connect them!
Creating something for someone else is a fantastic way to spend a cold, wintery afternoon. Crafting thank-you cards for their preschool teachers, You’re-a-great-neighbor cards for the neighbors, or even self-portraits for their grandparents will keep little ones busy and help them practice thinking of others as they play and create!
