Putting Up Christmas Decorations Early Is Good for Your Health

If you’re the type who wants to decorate for Christmas the day after Halloween – or even sooner – that’s a good thing. Don’t worry about the backlash from friends and family, putting up Christmas decorations early is actually beneficial for your mental health.

According to Steve McKeown, a psychoanalyst and performance coach in Britain, the earlier you put up Christmas decorations, the happier you’ll be. McKeown told British media site UNILAD that people like to associate with things that make them happy, and Christmas decorations do just that.

What’s more, a study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology indicated that there’s a connection between decorating a house for Christmas and appearing as more social to neighbors. Doing so could integrate one into social activities and create a friendlier, happier neighborhood.

I’m not one of those early decorators, but if that’s what helps to make someone happy this time of year, who am I to judge?

As wonderful as Christmas can be, it can also be a difficult time for some:  having to gather with family or friends with whom you have strained relationships; having to celebrate alone for the first time due to death or separations; the strain of not having enough money to buy gifts, or the strain of not buying the right ones. All of it can be hard to stomach, and if it takes seeing that visual reminder to guide you to a happier place, then why not?

Christmastime really does conjure strong feelings of childhood, when life was good for most of us. It offers a visual cue to relive the magic, or make up for lost delight.

October or early November is the right time for stores, but may not be the right time for the rest of the world. But if you’re an early decorator, do what works for you.

You’ll be a happier person for it.
