Chrissy Teigen’s “Pregnancy Face” is for All the Moms Who Gained Weight Everywhere

Chrissy Teigen has a way of relating to all of us in so many ways and nowhere is that more evident than when the hilarious soon-to-be mom of two is talking about pregnancy.

Anyone who has been pregnant knows that pregnancy can do a lot of, um, weird things to our bodies. Sure, you may technically only be pregnant in your uterus, but pregnancy literally affects every single part of our bodies. There's the fact that your blood volume literally doubles overnight, the fact that your heart is working harder to pump all that excess volume, the fact that hormones are flowing and joints are loosening and everything is just expanding

Including, for a lot of women, their faces. Call me crazy but “pregnancy face” is definitely a thing and it's definitely a thing that I have experienced with almost all of my pregnancies. There was a time when my “pregnancy face,” complete with rounded cheeks, swollen nose, and just a bigger everything, bothered me, but looking back at pictures of me from my times pregnant, all I can do is chuckle. Because I know now how temporary that time is and I know how lucky I was to get to experience pregnancy and carry four healthy babies to term and if I had to go through some swollen cheeks to get there, well then so be it.

But still, there's nothing like using a little humor to get through the hard parts about pregnancy, pregnancy face included, and that's where good ol' Chrissy Teigen comes to our rescue yet again.

In a tweet from last month, the star, who is due this year but hasn't revealed exactly how far along she is (although in my professional opinion as a celeb baby bump watcher, I'd put her at close to 7 months), joked about her own pregnancy face in a tweet

“I would weigh 40 pounds less without a face,” she continued joking in the comments.

When I read her tweets, I had to admit I laughed out loud. Everyone knows these things about pregnancy but not everyone necessarily talks–or jokes–about them. It can be a sensitive topic for some women, who may be battling body image struggles and face some difficulty embracing all the changes that come along with pregnancy. But for a celebrity who literally makes a living off her looks, it's refreshing to see her acknowledge that yup, pregnancy changes how we look, and nope, it's not a big deal.

Luckily, Teigen's fans had her back in the comments section of Twitter. “Girl I know the feeling. I thought mine was going to be the first nasal birth my nose grew so much,” wrote one fellow tweeter. “LMBO!!! I thought that too!! My ankles never got swollen but my face sure did!! ~weird~” wrote another. Other fans took to Twitter to assure the model mom that extra-plump cheeks and face was just a sign of a healthy growing baby and a little excess water weight was nothing to worry about. And let's face it, Teigen already has those infamous cheekbones that would make any type of pregnancy face look a little fuller.

Just like Teigen's fans pointed out, the strangest things can happen when you are pregnant and in some cases, the changes last longer than nine months. My shoe size, for example, permanently went up by one whole size after my third pregnancy (but not my first two). Fortunately, however, pregnancy face is usually totally temporary and doesn't cause any major side effects.

And aside from that, the most important thing is that Teigen–and all pregnant women–look beautiful no matter what. In fact, I think “pregnancy face” is just part of that special pregnancy glow.
