Where Can You Get the Best Deal on Diapers?

Let's be real. Buying diapers ranks up there as one of the least fun parts of adding a new baby to the family. Typically, it seems to go something like this:

  • Pack up the diaper bag, make sure you have your purse and phone, locate any coupons

  • Load the kids into the car and buckle up

  • Sing Mary Had a Little Lamb 14 times to avoid constant wailing from the little ones

  • Find a parking space and get everyone unloaded

  • Spend 10 minutes trying to get everyone buckled into the cartWander through the store telling your toddler he can’t have that toy/that snack/that package of men’s hair color with a model on the front that he thinks looks like daddy

  • Load the cart with diapers

  • Get in line behind five other people at the only open register

  • Sing Mary Had a Little Lamb another 6 times to avoid constant wailing from the little ones

  • Fork over way more cash than you’d like for the diapers

  • Get everyone safely loaded back in the car

  • Drive home and unload everyone and everything one more time

  • Swear that there has to be a better way

But I wanted to know if there really was a better way, so I sat down at the computer to do some investigating. I started with the basics, right from the start. Pampers Swaddlers Newborn diapers in size 1. A package of 216, because you know that you're going to go through about 10 diaper changes a day with your newborn. I wanted to see where I could actually score the best price without having to load up the car with kids and gear in tow.

As a disclaimer, keep in mind that prices change regularly and these prices are examples of what was to be found at the specific time I was shopping.

I started out with the retailer often hailed as having the cheapest prices – Walmart.

On the day I checked, you could score a box from Walmart for $30.00, with free 2-day shipping on orders over $35 (meaning you'd have to also order something else to save on shipping).

Then I hit the website for my favorite local store for all the good things, Target. On the day I checked, you would pay $25.99 for a box, with a special promotional offer to get a $20 gift card after spending $125. I'm a REDcard holder, so the 5% discount and free shipping would apply, or I could subscribe for the same discount.

Then I went to the online retailer who has won my heart – Amazon. It's no surprise that I love shopping on the couch in my pajamas at all hours of the night, or that Amazon is always my favorite companion in those moments. So it also didn't surprise me to see that I could get the same box of diapers for $20.79 using Subscribe & Save. There was also a $3 coupon that can be applied to first purchase, meaning a grand total of $17.79 for the same box of diapers I could have paid $30.00 for!

So clearly, there is a better way, and that way is Amazon.

New plan:

  • Log in to your Prime account
  • Click to fill your online cart with diapers, plus use online coupons and Subscribe and Save to save even more and be sure you won’t run out
  • Wait for that glorious moment the delivery driver knocks on your door and replenishes your diaper supply as you prepare to put your children down for a nap and spend some time binging on your favorite show streaming on Prime

I’d say if you don’t have a Target near you this might be the best option for you, but it’s also going to be like any other store where you have to hit the sales or you won’t get this deal. Target usually has really good deals on diapers where you spend so much or buy so may boxes and get a gift card back (sometimes $10, but usually $20-$25). With coupons, Cartwheel, and the gift cards factored in, I can usually get my diaper boxes down to like $15 a box on a regular basis.
