Busy Philipps on the Second Child Difference

Most first time moms are uber-diligent and overprotective of their first child. Holding, feeding, changing, and caring for the general needs of a newborn is something that a first time mother doesn’t always like to hand over to anyone else.

However, I think that if you ask most second time moms — while they still feel the overwhelming love and general responsibility for their second child — typically they are more relaxed with each of the subsequent kids.

Actress Busy Philipps is no different. She recently talked about life in with a second child.   She said, “I’m way more relaxed, I was a total basket case with my first child, and I wouldn’t even put her down or let anyone else hold her. I was just so terrified, and now I know that it’s okay. And I can let other people hold the baby.”

She goes onto say that Cricket is the perfect baby, making being more relaxed even easier.

I think that every mother becomes more relaxed after realizing that not only are babies really resilient, but that making mistakes and giving up some of the control is acceptable and even healthy for you as a mother.

I know, for me, I became more and more relaxed with my subsequent babies. With Preston, I rinsed the pacifier before every use, used a wipe warmer, force fed him every two hours, rarely put him down and was generally very protective. However, with Grace and even more so with Collin, a dropped pacifier got only a quick wipe on my clothes, wipes came straight out of the package, and the swing became my best friend.

With later children, a dropped pacifier got only a quick wipe on my clothes, wipes came straight out of the package, and the swing became my best friend.

I think you become more lax not only because you also have a toddler to care for but also because you know that there are very few things that you can do to simultaneously handle more than one child at a time and sometimes things have to be put aside.

Were you more or less relaxed with your subsequent children?

I find that even with my second I’m in freak out mode about everything pregnancy. I worry at the faintest little pain n find relaxing is not an option lately. I think it stems from losing my last pregnancy but I’m hoping ill be more relaxed once I have the baby and ill be able to let go more.
