This Breastfeeding Barbie is So Inspiring

I know for a lot of families, the jury is still out on Barbie.

Although we have come a long way in how diverse Barbie is (there are now Barbies in different shapes and sizes and skin colors and abilities), it still feels like the traditional and iconic impossibly thin Barbie has shaped a lot of how girls learn to play.

Personally, I have never kept Barbies from my girls, simply because I loved to play with the two Barbies I had as a kid. (Yes, only two.) I still have my beloved Irish Barbie, with her fiery red hair and green gown — it still makes me happy to see my own daughters playing with her.

But I also admit that I have had my doubts about Barbie and the message she is sending. Is she teaching my girls to see themselves through their looks? Is she preaching the message that attractiveness is your most important asset, that shiny hair and perfect teeth and matching accessories are the ticket to happiness?

I don't know the answer to that, but I do know that there is a new Barbie on the market that is sending a new and awesome message to girls:

Enter Breastfeeding Barbie.

Handcrafted from a seller on Etsy, this breastfeeding Barbie is all kinds of goals, especially for moms who want to show their kids realistic images of women. Not all mothers can or will breastfeed, but for those that do, they know that their kids love playing “nursing” mama. My kids have nursed countless babies around the house and it always is so sweet to see. There is no shame in a kid mimicking what a mom does every day and it's really a beautiful thing to see.

I also love how the seller of this doll purposely removed the make-up from the factory Barbie to reflect a more realistic image of a mom hard at work. Make-up while nursing in the middle of the night? No one has time for that.

But most of all, this Barbie was created to help inspire the next generation to embrace the natural beauty of breastfeeding — and I have to say that that might be a Barbie we can all celebrate.

“The act of breastfeeding continues to sustain a child from birth into toddlerhood, sometimes beyond, and these breastfeeding dolls have been created to celebrate breastfeeding in an educational and comprehensive way for children,” the Etsy seller who makes all the little dolls describes.
This breastfeeding Barbie doll sells out quickly, so you'll have to watch her page if you're interested in picking one up for yourself!
