The First Ever Birth Control App – and It’s 93% Effective!
There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to contraception: every woman is different, with different needs and priorities. Enter Natural Cycles. The “brain” behind this birth control app is a smart algorithm that can accurately determine a woman’s daily fertility by analyzing changes in her basal body temperature, which increases after ovulation. To learn more, EverydayFamily’s Shiloh Johnson spoke to Dr. Elina Berglund, the creator of the algorithm and co-founder of Natural Cycles, and Dr. Juan Acuna, Chair of the Department of Medical Health and Sciences Research at Florida International University. See the full interview here:
Dr. Berglund explained more about Natural Cycles, a birth control app that is the first of its kind. It is an effective non-hormonal contraceptive solution, and it has been cleared by the FDA. To use Natural Cycles, women are required to take their temperature with a basal thermometer first thing in the morning and enter the information into the app. You will also need to enter the start of your menstrual cycle for it to be accurate. That data builds into a personalized fertility indicator that identifies green days when no protection is needed, or red days when condoms should be used or sex should be avoided to prevent a pregnancy.
Dr. Acuna added that in his experience in clinical practice, he has seen that women do not know enough about their own fertility. He and the Natural Cycles team are passionate about empowering women with the knowledge they need to properly understand their unique monthly cycles. That can be very complex to track on your own, but this app does the tracking for you. The app has an effectiveness rate of 93%, meaning that 7 women out of 100 get pregnant during one year of use. No method of contraception is 100% effective, and Natural Cycles relies on the use of protection or abstaining from sex on red days.
Dr. Acuna was excited to say that that is the same rate of effectiveness as injectables and birth control pills, which is a huge breakthrough!
Of course, this birth control app can be used when trying to conceive as well! Natural Cycles really promotes an understanding of their bodies to women. Dr. Berglund herself has used the app to successfully avoid pregnancy and to plan a pregnancy. She is currently pregnant!
