Beauty Tips for Busy Moms
I am not a fashionista. In fact, I will shamefully admit that I spend most of my day wearing yoga pants and sweatshirts – and throw on jeans and a decent shirt from my very limited wardrobe when I have to make an actual appearance at my children’s school (or grocery store or doctor appointment).
Unfortunately, with all the running I do, and with 4 daughters, and with only one bathroom in the house, I don’t have much time to ‘get ready’ and priss myself up. Being a mom has taught me a few things, and one of those things is how to make myself look ‘alive and awake’ without actually feeling ‘alive or awake.’
Today, in my most humble of fashions, I will share ‘my beauty (and I use that term lightly) secrets’ with you!
One of my favorite tricks is for greasy hair. I wash my hair every day, because if I didn’t, it would look like I combed through it with bacon grease. But on those days when I wake up too late to get a shower in, or have to leave the house without clean hair – my beauty secret is baby powder. It helps to make my hair feel less greasy. And it smells wonderful. Just be careful not to pour it on your scalp or it will look like you are treating a case of lice with powdered Sevin. (Not recommended by the way)
The next necessity is lip gloss. I don’t like the way lipstick feels on my lips. Plus, I feel way too done up when I am wearing lipstick. But I love light lip glosses that at least make my lips look plumper and make me feel like a woman.
Another must have – and I keep this in the car is a spray deodorant. One of the worst things you can do is try to put on gel deodorant or stick deodorant over pits that aren’t cleaned or shaven. Spray deodorant is where it’s at!
I am not much for makeup. I wash my face, use lotion, and then use an oil free powder to make my skin tone look even. Aside from that, the only other thing I use is mascara, and this is one of those red light fixes that really brightens my face. It at the very least gives the appearance that “I tried.”
Another must have essential is hand lotion. I gave up on manicures many years ago. But as I am getting older, and my hands sit in more dishwater and chemicals, they are starting to age. Using hand lotion makes them look and feel a lot better.
Of course a mom on the fly has to keep either a trial size bottle of mouthwash or some gum in her purse just in case she accidentally crosses the path of someone she knows.
On days when my energy is low and I feel like I was hit by a bus, I hit my local herb shop, or grocery store and buy a bottle of organic Kombucha Tea. I love this stuff! And it can instantly brighten your skin and make you feel like a million bucks. Even better, it’s not a quick sugar fix like an energy drink and supports your immune system.
Of course, no mother should be out and about without a favorite hat. I think women look great in hats, and they are perfect way to hide bad hair day, and much easier than a braid – and cooler than a ponytail. And since hats are so popular today, they don’t scream, “Hey I haven’t showered in a week and am wearing this hat to hide my nasty hair,” but instead say, “I’m a cool mama in an even cooler hat!”
