Alicia Keys on Motherhood
Becoming a mother will change your life in an instant. Suddenly you are 100% responsible for teaching, loving, and nurturing another person. No one can make as big of an impact on a child than a parent.
Alicia Keys tells Scholastic Parent and Child, that becoming a mother has made her a better person. She says, “Being a parent has made me more open, more connected to myself, more happy, and more creative. I’m more discerning in what I do and how I do it. It’s just made me a better person all the way around.” She goes on to talk about how being a parent has been hard, but it just feels right for her.
“What’s been surprisingly easy is just how natural parenthood feels. I feel great about how easily I’ve fallen into the role. I love it!” She has also been able to find a pretty good balance of work and family time, making the most of the time she has together with her son, Egypt Dauod, and husband, Swizz Beatz. “We love to go to art galleries and to the park,” she shares. “We love to do painting days and to visit our family — and we also love to run around our house and just go nuts!”
I agree with Keys; while I was not a bad person prior to having children, I certainly like myself much more now. I am less judgmental, have more compassion, and focus on being a better example in everything I do for the sake of my kids. I know I will not get to mold their little personalities forever, but I certainly want my children to be good, productive members of society and I feel the best way to ensure that is by being one myself. I try to teach them charity, kindness, and fortitude and hope that when they do grow up, that they make an impact on the world.
