A 70-Year-Old Woman Just Had a Baby
In-vitro fertilization (IVF) has helped many families have babies and one of the most recent IVF stories that made the headlines is the story of a woman in her 70's who just delivered her first baby.
Yes, you read that correctly.
The parents are Mohinder Singh Gill, 79, and Daljinder Kaur, 70, who became first-time parents to a healthy baby boy, all through the help of IVF.
According to reports, the couple wasn't able to afford the procedure to be able to have a baby any earlier and have been saving their whole lives in order to have a baby. When you think about it that way, it's almost very sweet and heartbreaking. Can you imagine being willing to wait so long for a baby?
If it seems a little unbelievable, Gill and Kaur are actually not the first parents in their 70's to have a baby. Another Indian couple also had a baby with the help of the same doctor who impregnated Gill and Kaur last year.
And further confounding this story is the fact that, in Indian culture, a man who is infertile is not allowed to have land. So this poor couple had to fight in the courts in order to get land that rightfully belonged to them, along with saving money. Additionally, adoption is not allowed past the age of 45 and despite the fact that they did adopt a son earlier in life, he left to go to school in the U.S. and the parents never heard from him again.
If you're worried about the fate of this baby, it sounds like the couple has a lot of family and friends close by who are more than willing to pitch in to help with daily care and, in the event that something would happen, long-term care as well.
I have to admit that my first reaction to this story was, Are you serious?! but hearing more about this couple's heartbreak to simply have the family that so many of us are lucky to have, well I can't help but think a little bit differently now and wish them all the best. After all, all you need is love, right?
What do you think of this story? Should parents have the right to have a baby at any age?
