If you're looking for how to get pregnant fast, you may be getting a lot of unsolicited (and some totally solicited) advice from family, friends, and even strangers.
Everyone has an opinion when it comes to starting your family. And while some comments may be helpful, others certainly are not. For example, never tell a woman trying to get pregnant to “just relax.” Unless, you know, you don't value continuing on with your day.
But getting pregnant can be a difficult thing for some women and when you consider how much has to go right in order to achieve pregnancy, from the timing of the egg to the sperm making it through the long and arduous trek through the vagina, to literally swimming to the death to make it to the egg, and then fight its way through a literal force field (seriously, I'm not making this stuff up), it feels like a miracle that any of us are here at all.
As much of a miracle as it can feel like, getting pregnant is still very much a biological process within the body that can be helped along with a few tips and tricks. Aside from any major issues that may prevent conception, here are a few tips to help you get pregnant fast.
Try cough syrup
Sounds crazy, right? But many mamas swear by this little trick. And as it turns out, there is some science behind this advice. Cough syrup contains an ingredient that helps thin and draw out mucus when you're sick. But that effect isn't just limited to your nose. It also affects your vaginal discharge. And many women believe that by thinning out and drawing out your cervical fluid, it allows more sperm to make its way into where it needs to go to make a baby. There's more discharge there to “catch” the sperm and help draw it in. So, um, pass the Robotussin for a romantic night in!
Understand your cycle
It may seem like pretty basic advice, but many women don't actually learn how to accurately track and understand their cycle. For almost my entire reproductive life, I truly thought that I ovulated around day 14 of my cycle because that's what all the “books” and literature about women's cycles say. But when I started actually tracking my cycle using a thermometer I learned that I'm not average. I actually ovulate on day 8 or 9 of my cycle, making me fertile a lot sooner than I ever realized.
The point is, you may not even realize how your cycle is working and that can work against you if you're trying to conceive. Buy a simple thermometer, start tracking, or get a more technical thermometer if you're willing to spend a bit more and once you figure out when you actually ovulate, aim to have sex within one or two days of ovulation.
Schedule a pre-conception check-up
If you haven't had children yet, it may be a good idea to schedule a preconception check-up with your OB/GYN. At that appointment, you can get screened for any potential problems and make sure you're as healthy as possible before trying to conceive. If you have any concerns about getting pregnant (a family history of infertility or ovarian cysts, for example), you can discuss them with your doctor or midwife before you try to conceive so you can be sure to tackle those issues ahead of time.
Maintain a healthy weight
I know this “tip” isn't necessarily a fun one to hear, but studies do show that one of the single most effective methods to improving fertility is achieving a healthy weight before getting pregnant. This includes gaining weight if you're underweight and losing weight if you are overweight and it definitely applies to both partners. It's also worth nothing that regular, moderate exercise has been found to help women achieve pregnancy faster too, although too much “extreme” (and remember, we're talking very extreme, like Olympic level extreme) exercise can cause you to stop ovulating all together.
Stop smoking and drinking
Sure, you may know that you shouldn't drink an entire six pack of beer once you're preggers, but studies show that abstaining from alcohol and smoking before you're pregnant can help increase your chances of conceiving too. No one said motherhood would be easy, right?
Follow a fertility diet
Yes, this is a thing. And no, it's not anything crazy. It's really more of a common sense diet that incorporates all the latest studies on achieving pregnancy faster. One study review summed up a fertility diet as one that includes the following foods:
- Low trans-fat, more “good” fat (monounsaturated)
- Less animal protein, more vegetable protein
- Lots of fiber
- Lots of “good” carbs that are low glycemic (sweet potato, I'm looking at you)
- Skip the low-fat dairy product and go for the all-natural, full-fat ones when you eat it
- More plant foods that are high in non-heme iron
I refuse to try to tell you to avoid stress while you're trying to conceive, because hello, this is life, but studies have shown that managing stress more effectively can help when trying to conceive. And one of the easiest ways to both reduce stress and improve your outlook is meditation–even a few minutes in the morning can make a difference. Try it out with a simple breathing mantra and don't focus on trying to de-stress, because ironically, that will probably only make you stress about being stressed. It makes total sense.
