6 Ways To Enjoy a Vacation When You’re Pregnant

Folks, I was this close to getting to go on my first-ever tropical vacation with my husband.

For our Christmas gift, our in-laws sprung for an all-inclusive Mexican resort for all the children and spouses—no grandchild allowed. (Except, of course, for the one that I accidentally discovered I was carrying two weeks before we were set to leave.)

Although I have to admit that I was pretty disappointed to find out that I was having another baby before we had planned to, I also wanted to enjoy our last hurrah as a couple in what I imagine will be a very long time.

On one hand, I knew I would be early enough in the pregnancy where I'd still be able to do a lot of activities if I wanted to, unlike our honeymoon, where I was visibly pregnant and “banned” from some of the fun things I wanted to do like horseback riding on the beach.

On the other hand, I was fighting off horrible morning sickness and could not imagine how I could enjoy a tropical vacation. Here are some of the ways I prepared and enjoyed my “babymoon” while pregnant.

1. Pack peppermints. It's my number-one secret for fighting off morning sickness. Real, authentic peppermint candies, none of that imitation stuff. I buy them in bulk at the grocery store. Stash them in your carry-on, in your luggage, and your beach bag.

2. Embrace the sundress. Is there anything better than a sundress to a pregnant woman? So loose, so comfy, and so cute!

3. Give yourself permission to do nothing. The hardest part about this vacation for me—a normally heavy planner and doer—was the fact that I literally felt like doing nothing more than laying on the beach. It took me a while, but finally I embraced the fact that I had a perfectly good excuse for a lazy vacation. It's a vacation for a reason, right? And maybe you can enjoy a vacation that is actually relaxing for once and doesn't require a vacation to recover from your vacation!

4. One drink really is OK. Everyone kept telling me this, and I pushed them off. “No, no,” I'd say, having in mind the image of a picture-perfect mother. “I can't enjoy it anyways!” And on some level, that's true, but on another level, I realized that I was being a little bit of a party pooper. Honestly, it was perfectly fine for me to enjoy a few sips of a fruity, tropical drink, or skip the risk altogether and go virgin. (Unlike the circumstances that got you here …)

5. Enjoy the beach. Even at a mere eight weeks, part of me felt like a beached whale, but on the other hand, how great is it to have an excuse not to suck it in on the beach?

6. No hangovers = awesome. While my husband and I turned in pretty early every night on vacation, and the rest of the family stayed up to party, I have to admit, I didn't really miss being part of the drinking. (OK, so I kind of missed it.) No smoking around me, no horrible hangover, no behavior to be embarrassed about the next day—a non-drinking vacay isn't so bad!

I am 25 weeks pregnant and will be going to Hawaii in about 6 days. I just plan to relax and wear my pretty dresses the entire time. Except for when I’m at the beach, of course. I didn’t know how I felt about wearing a bikini, but then I decided to just flaunt my beautiful belly with the most glamorous white and gold bikini I’ve ever seen. At first I was worried because I thought I was going to look fat and weird among all of the sexy hula dancers. Then I just decided to embrace it. I’m not going to worry about how I look next to other women – I’m only going to focus on being happy with how I feel the entire time… and to make sure I have have several pairs of Dr. Scholls. Hahaha

I am 12 weeks pregnant and next week we are going on our first ever honeymoon after four years of marriage. When we planned for this trip, I recently came out of death’s mouth twice. Had a miscarriage and almost died from it and then a week after developed blood poisoning. I wasn’t suppose to live but I am alive. My husband wanted to spend as much time with me as he can cuz according to doctors I can still die anytime. So, he planned this for us as we have never been on honeymoon. I wasn’t pregnant at that time. We found out about this pregnancy 6 weeks before. I have all the side effects of pregnancy. Can’t eat or drink anything and traveling kills me. I have tried all the remedies seaband, medicine but nothing works except unisom (sleeping pill). Now as we are going to Bahamas and I’ll have to fly I am a little concerned. I want to enjoy myself and we had plans for what we want to do… Which now we can’t cuz of me. I’ll sure follow all the tips on this topic and will let you know how did it go for me. Except for peppermint candy. Me and mint are not good friends right now. Thanks for the great tips. It sure did relax me a little bit.

I’m so sorry to hear of your tough situation, Sidra. Have you spoken with your doctor about traveling? They may have some advice for you which will also help. I’m glad this article helped to ease your worries some. I’ll be thinking of you and hope you’re able to enjoy your honeymoon! Best wishes to you and your hubby and baby.
