6 Ways to Bring Serenity to Your Work at Home Workspace
Moms who work from home know how hard it is to tackle your to do list on any given day. You sit down with an open laptop only to have your phone ring off the hook or become distracted by the laundry you were supposed to do hours ago. Our minds literally go from one undone chore to the next.
With endless distractions, it becomes hard to focus on the task at hand.
Here are six sure fire ways to bring serenity to your workplace:
Bring the Outdoors In
Whether it's fresh cut flowers or a bright green houseplant, bring a bit of nature to your desk with a little foliage. Brightly colored petals can perk up your mood. A nice plant can be a sign of a fresh beginning when things get stressful in the workplace.
Create the Perfect Work Playlist
Whether you listen to an online radio station like Pandora, or pump your own tunes through your iPod, music can be an instant mood booster. If you're distracted by lyrics in your music try listening to jazz, instrumentals, or classical instead.
Find Your Favorites
There is something to say about sticking to your favorites when you work at home that speaks to peace. A favorite mug, set of pens or tablets of paper. Whether you're sipping your favorite tea or a strong cup of joe, there's something special about having a mug to call your own. It's there for you day in and day out. Sometimes consistency is all we need to feel at peace.
Put a Pen to Paper
Write it down – with an actual pen and sheet of paper. While it might sound old school, there's something to be said about putting pen to paper and being able to cross things off of a list. Try colored pens to organize your various tasks for the different aspects of your life and to get your creative juices flowing. Pick up a trendy notebook to keep things in order – sometimes it just takes a little something pretty to keep you inspired to stay focused and organized.
Have a Defined Working Place
We don't all have the luxury of a private office within our home, but having a set place where you work will set you up for a focused work environment. Whether that's sitting at your dining room table or working on your living room floor after the kids go to bed at night, having a routine location where you keep all of your work supplies housed will add the routine and predictability you need to be more productive. Keep an organized basket with all of your pens, notepads, calendards, computer and tablets so you can go to that one location for all of your work-at-home needs when the time comes for you to plug in those hours. By housing them all in the same place and working from the same place routinely, you'll get your work load tackled more efficiently.
Make Activity a Priority
Have a list of go to stretches that can be done from your chair or with minimal space. Everyone needs a break now and again while working from home. It's too easy to stay sedentary at your desk. By making a series of stretches or thirty minutes of exercise a part of your daily routine, you can clear your mind, and make sure that your body is working at it's peak. Stretch your neck from side to side and get those kinks out. Take a moment to look away from the computer screen every half hour to keep eyes from going blurry throughout the course of the day in addition to your focus activity time.
Serenity in the work place may take a while to achieve, but you can give it a jump-start with the above tips. By making some of these things a priority, you will achieve the peace that will make working from home a success.
