6 Simple But Impressive Trunk-or-Treat Ideas

It's that time of year, ladies and um, ladies (because I'm assuming that's who is actually reading this post right now in anticipation of Halloween.) It's fall ya'll! And if you will be participating in a Trunk-or-Treat event like I will be this year, you may have started considering what kind of theme you should go with.

This year will mark the 5th official year I have voluntarily signed up to decorate a car for Trunk or Treat and just to add to the fun, I also am organizing our school's official event this year. Which means that 1) I won't have a lot of time to create an elaborate theme on the day of the event and 2) I won't have a lot of time to clean up said theme on the day of the event either.

All of that to say, I need my Trunk-or-Treat theme to be easy yet impressive enough to impress my totally critical 5th grader. She's seen me pull out all of my usual go-tos for Trunk or Treat year after year and honestly, she's over it. After I tried to do the same theme I did last year, she begged me to come up with something else.

I'm still looking for ideas, but 5 years in, I am focused on only two things: 1) simple and 2) creative. I will fully admit to you that I am not an artistic or creative person, so elaborate, crafty themes are just not my thing. Instead, I'm more of a stick-things-up with tape and hope for the best girl. Please see the following Trunk-or-Treat themes, most of which I have actually done:

Cookie Monster and Cookies

I don't care what Michelle Obama says, for Halloween, the Cookie Monster gets cookies. For this Trunk or Treat, I simply wrapped my minivan in blue tablecloths, drew some eyeballs with permanent marker on white cardboard, and made two cookie costumes with two pieces of brown felt and a hot glue gun. (The cookie monster costume was borrowed from a friend, but it definitely wasn't essential to the look!) Overall, this one took me all of 10 minutes and it was well under 10 bucks. Perfect.

This one was not my best work, but it worked. I used some red felt, spray painted some foam circles and poles to create the rope-off, and bought the Paparazzi background off Amazon. I also recruited my sister as my celebrity spotting and I think she enjoyed herself more than the kids.

The Monster Mouth Trunk or Treat is a classic, for good reason, primarily because it's so easy and the kids love it. I'm not sure why my children are dressed as superheroes here, but I had just given birth, so we'll go with it. For this theme, I bought two long pieces of red felt and a few white pieces, then cut and glued the “teeth” on. It was simple enough for me to handle and the kids had fun helping me as well.

Some balloons, a little bit of Saran Wrap, what appears to be a pie tin and some tinfoil and cardboard? I can handle that.

I think I could take or leave the leg, but some jagged foam board is definitely my speed for a Trunk or Treat. Plus, the kids will love it! I think.

OK, sorry, this might be a little more complicated than some of the other ideas presented, but how cool is this?? You know you'll be the most popular Trunk or Treat around–especially if you happen to bring any of the good stuff with you.
