Summertime is great when you’re pinching pennies! You can picnic in the park, ride on the bike path, or hike a beautiful nature trail—all for free! The cold and blowy winter tends to force us indoors for activities where we sit, eat, and pay through the nose! Don’t let the cold or your skinny wallet keep you from getting out with your partner! (Heaven knows we mommas need that time!) Here are some budget-friendly date ideas to keep you from getting cabin fever this winter!

Horse Drawn Carriage Ride

I know what you’re thinking: This is supposed to be a “budget-friendly” list. Well, it can be! One of my favorite memories of winter dates with my husband was a horse and buggy ride we took around Salt Lake City’s Temple Square while the Christmas lights were on. There were several horses and buggies available, and for a short ride around the square, it was $15. We thought ahead and dressed warm and brought mugs of hot cocoa, and it was the perfect romantic touch to our evening. We just enjoyed the free tours of Temple Square and the beautiful downtown area! Many historic cities offer similar tours and are available daily. If you live in a city where they don’t run daily, you can often book or hire out for a group. The rate is higher, but if you plan ahead with several couples, it can still be very reasonable! (The kiddos will love it, too, if you can’t get a babysitter!)

Ice Skating

Chances are, unless you’re secretly Nancy Kerrigan, you’ve probably had limited experience on the ice. Cling tight to your partner, and show him how much you trust him. Have fun being goofy and turning pirouettes that land you on your behind, and then go home and warm up in front of a warm fire.

Plan an “Amazing Race”

Get creative with your hometown, and have fun with a few other couples! Plan a few “road blocks” like making a snowman in a local park, retrieving a pine cone from that pine tree by the courthouse, or even a hot wing eating challenge at the local pub. Think of fun activities that are unique to your area that will get your friends in the competitive spirit! Have the finish line be your house, where you can have a potluck meal and re-hash your experiences!

Snowshoeing

Skiing can get pricey, but don’t let that discourage you from enjoying your local ski country. Many area resorts offer snow shoe rentals, which can offer a great way to work in a fun fitness and sightseeing date!

Fireplace S’mores

Keep the TV off and the lights dimmed. Get out the s’mores ingredients, hot cocoa, and some yummy treats, and curl up on a blanket in front of the fireplace at home. Light some candles, and just enjoy the warm fire inside and the snow falling outside. (Just don’t forget to turn the baby monitors off and relax!)
