Thanksgiving is so close, I can almost smell the turkey now … and the mashed potatoes, and the gravy, and the green bean casserole. (Hey, a pregnant girl has to eat!) Of course, the best thing about Thanksgiving is the time you spend with your family and friends, celebrating the joys of life and the blessings of the year.

If this year’s blessing happens to be a bun in the proverbial oven, Thanksgiving can also be a great time to announce your pregnancy to the world: you’re already counting your blessings, your family is gathered together, and you can top off your announcement with a celebratory slice of pumpkin pie for good measure (while your family toasts the happy news with a glass of wine – sorry, ladies, you’ll have to wait until next Thanksgiving for that).

Pregnancy announcements have come along way thanks to the thousands of ideas on blogs and social media outlets. Need some inspiration? Here are five of our favorite ways to announce your pregnancy on Thanksgiving.

Chalkboard Art or Signage

Thanks to Pinterest, walls in kitchens and hallways across the country have been transformed into chalkboards. While many usually show an inspirational quote, daily message to your family, a recipe, or a shopping list, chalkboards or walls can be transformed into a surprise pregnancy announcement. Use colored chalk (think fall colors, like orange, red, brown and yellow) to write a message for your friends and family to see. You can also use it for announcement pictures to share on Facebook. For those of us who aren’t blessed with an artistic touch, this adorable printable sign from Etsy shop MMason Designs is the perfect prop for your Thanksgiving decor.

T-shirt for Big Brother or Big Sister

If you’re expanding your family, a cute t-shirt for your first little is a great way to surprise your friends and family with the news of your pregnancy. A quick search on Etsy showcases adorable styles. We love this personalized t-shirt perfect for your “li'l turkey.” You can pick up your own (complete with customized due date and big brother or sister name) at Zoey’s Attic Personalized Gifts. Getting your family to tear their eyes away from the football game is up to you, though.

Baby Place card

Whether your dinner party is large or small, adding place cards to the table setting can add a personalized touch to your Thanksgiving meal – and can also be a fun way to surprise your family with your good news. PicMonkey (a photo editing site) has a tutorial for making place cards for your Thanksgiving meal. Make cards with the names of all your guests, then add an additional place card that says “Reserved for Baby – Arriving Soon” (replace “soon” with your due date month). The place card can also be used for a cute keepsake for a baby book or scrapbook.

T-shirt for Mama

I’m kind of a sucker for cute graphic t-shirts. If you’re expecting your first, you can still get in on the customized t-shirts with this adorable option from Zoey’s Attic. Adorned with the words “This is what I’m thankful for” and an arrow pointing to your growing bump, this t-shirt is sure to get a reaction. It is handmade and available in a variety of maternity styles and colors.

“Baby” Foods

Foodie types will love this next idea, which is a bit more subtle but will lead to a fun reaction from your guests. Select a variety of “baby” foods, from baby carrots and corn to tiny roasted tomatoes and small versions of your traditional favorites, and add them to your menu. Play up the “baby” or small aspect of each item and make sure to encourage guests to try a little of each. You can either wait for guests to figure it out on their own, or announce the news at the end of the meal. Try some of these yummy dishes: buttered baby cornmarmalade glazed baby carrotsroasted red tomatoes; and mini spinach lasagna roll-ups.
